It was 6:00 A.M. when Burke decreed an end to the frivolity in that garage in Brooklyn. The loot was transferred into three separate cars, each of which had a different destination. Eaton took a bundle of cash and gems in his vehicle, and within minutes set off for the Hollywood, Florida home of mob string-puller Paul Vario, Sr. Rodriguez took a huge pile also, and he was soon gone to deliver the goods to an intermediary for Tony Ducks at an undisclosed Long Island location. The rest of the haul was placed in Fat Frankie the Driver’s shiny black Cadillac limousine. Then Stacks drove off in the Ford Econoline van he had been charged with destroying in the compactors of New Jersey, carrying the license plate he was to swap for the one the cops knew the number of, and the five hundred dollars that was to pay for the whole thing. He went off instead to his fateful rendevous with the Kahlua and cream of the after-hour joint in Brownsville. Little Marty, who had come to take the second van to another compactor somewhere in New England, went home, since there was no second van for him to crush.

Then Two-Gun Tommy and Burke and Mr. Y sped off with Fat Frankie and the money. The gang had mostly gone off on their own separate routes now, and it was time to drop off Mr. Y and send him on his. Mr. Y, for reasons that are vague, insisted on taking the subway. Even the Robert’s Lounge stoolie who supplied the author with that hearsay account seemed genuinely puzzled at this. Garbage and utility and service trains rumbled through the station, as they do at that hour, but soon Mr. Y was headed for midtown. He went to the Port Authority Bus Terminal on Eighth Avenue and caught the first Greyhound to Florida. He was to join his boss, Paul Vario, Sr., and he was also to join the money. It’s said that he got more than his share. Today, Mr. Y is a very wealthy man, whereabouts unknown. But it’s said he passes out H. Upmanns to everyone he meets.

It was 6:10 A.M. when Mr. Y shook hands all around and left the limo at an IND station in Brooklyn. In less than two hours, Burke and DeSimone were due back at the Community Treatment Center in midtown Manhattan. But they had a stop to make somewhere in Queens first. It was going to be a close one.

There was still the matter of a few million dollars’ worth of merchandise that had to be disposed of. That had come to pose a serious problem. Remarkably, neither Tony Ducks nor Paul Vario, Sr. wanted all of it at this stage, since the expected heat the robbery would generate would make it virtually impossible to move it through the usual channels. Vario wanted a third of the booty sent down by courier, and Eaton was already on his way to Florida.
