AFTER SOFIA AND I BONDED over our tales of love, woe, and makeup, I convinced her to join us for dinner, even though it’d be a working dinner for the team. I knew I could trust her to stay mum about the work plans we discussed, and honestly, she’d come a long way from Denver to help at the last moment. Yes, Shane was paying her for her time, but having her join us for dinner tonight was the least we could do.

Besides, I’d made a new friend and while Leo was the best friend a girl could ever have, I realized I missed having a close female friend who I could discuss boy issues with...ahem, Leo issues.

The Astonian had set up our dinner in the same conference room we’d been using all weekend, which was convenient because we were already comfortable in the space.

But when the two of us came through the doors, comfortable wasn’t the mood of the room.

Shane and Leo stood chest to chest in confrontation while the other part of our crew who’d already arrived stood way off to the side, wide-eyed, but not willing to get between the two posturing alpha males.

Since when did Leo become an alpha male?

Huh.

“You need to stay away from her,” Leo growled. “She’s not interested.”

He didn’t intimidate Shane in the least. “She gets to make her own decisions about her life. She doesn’t need you to stand in as her guard bulldog.”

I raised an eyebrow at them, although neither one had noticed us enter.

“Ooh, sexy alpha standoff,” Sofia whispered from my side. “Tony Randall looks even hotter now, but I think you need to check your facts. Your man is as much a Rock Hudson as Shane ever was, if not more. Protective looks good on him.”

She was right. I could suddenly see it. My best friend had turned into a hottie sometime when I wasn’t looking, and he looked every bit as tough and masculine as my fantasy guy as he stood up to the bigger, bulkier Shane.

Until this moment, I just hadn’t realized exactly who my fantasy guy was.

The problem...Shane was still our client, and this kind of behavior wouldn’t work right now. If we were on our own time, that would be different. But not now, no matter how much I appreciated Leo trying to take care of me.

Somewhere along the way, he’d become my protector when I’d started out as his. Maybe that’s what a relationship meant...we took care of one another.

But that was a debate for another day. Right now, I needed to stop this.

I joined the two of them. “Okay, boys,” I whispered.

Both their startled gazes swung to me. They truly didn’t notice I’d come into the room.

“I don’t know what’s going on here.”

Shane started to speak, but I raised my good hand to stop him.

“I don’t want to know. What I know is that we still have two days of work to do here and this first day has already been a long,
