Chapter 9
Zach checked on Kim while she slept, and wished like hell he could solve her case and then climb into bed with her. She was the type of woman he considered to be a life changer.
Thatâs what was happening to him. He was changing, and he didnât know what to do about it. As he stood in the doorway of her room at 3:00 a.m., he knew that Kim was the only woman who had ever made him laugh and think hard at the same time. He was filled with admiration for her, and heâd never felt that before for a woman outside of his family.
Kim was tough. Tougher than any woman the Hood team had ever worked with.
She wasnât an emotional woman in the typical sense. She didnât cry at things that made most women cry. All day she heard gruesome details about the failings of mankind, and she didnât shed a tear. All day she listened to how we recklessly disposed of each otherâs love and lives once they were no longer useful. She viewed pictures of horrible atrocities at the hands of man, and she looked into the face of evil and unspeakable grief with equal fairness and compassion.
Kim had no one. No family to fall back on, no one at home to help relieve her stress. Yet she still walked out of the courtroom each day, holding his hand, her phone and purse in the other, asking if she could go outside and soak up a little bit of sun. That was all. Her life was so simple, and she didnât expect any more from it.
Zach didnât understand her simplicity. He understood depression, sadness and bitterness. Anger, frustration and pity were emotions he knew well. But acceptance?
He had a hard time with that one. How could someone accept the fact that they were the last of their family on earth? Sheâd accepted her life of no family, and she moved on.
That was absolutely unthinkable to him. He needed every member of the Hood clan. Without them heâd be nothing.
Zach closed her door and settled down to review their day.
Court had been difficult today, with both sides pushing the legal envelope.
Whenever there had been a fight between opposing counsel, Kim had waded into the middle, and she didnât back down, either. Nobody got away with anything in her courtroom, and Zach could see why she was hated among defense attorneys.
Today the prosecutor had tried her patience. Heâd questioned several witnesses until the court practically knew their life stories. The judge had forced him to move on. âIf this persists, Iâll have your cocounsel examine your witnesses. Pick up the pace,â sheâd told him.
Heâd heeded the warning, and when heâd run out of witnesses, he had come clean. âMy star witness hasnât arrived. Can we have a short continuance so we can ascertain his whereabouts?â
âNo. The court has been very indulgent. Youâve wasted enough of our time. Call your next witness.â
âBut this is a key witness to the prosecutionâs case, Your Honor.
