Chapter Eight

IF CLAY’S phone rang one more time, he was going to toss it out the truck window. He wasn’t entirely sure it was Darrell calling him, but who else could it be since it wasn’t a set ringtone?

He managed to get home without running over some of the idiots on the road or answering his cell. After he parked, he slammed into the house. His phone was burning a hole in his pocket. Dammit to hell and back, since he was on call, he couldn’t have the beer he so desperately wanted either.

Giving up, he flopped on the couch and dug his phone out. He unlocked it, and a couple of voicemails and text messages from Darrell popped up.

“Shit. I knew it.” Clay tossed the phone across the couch and leaned his head back, staring at the ceiling.

As tempting as it was to see what Darrell said, Clay didn’t look. Oh, he was sure Darrell had reasonable-sounding excuses for what happened. Then again Darrell might have manned up and admitted what was going on.

This was not how he planned for the day to go.

His cell phone rang and Clay jumped. Turning his head, he shot it an evil glare. It continued to ring innocently. His fingers itched to snatch the damn thing up. He could almost visualize himself picking it up and accepting the call. In his mind’s eye, he could see himself listening to all the pretty excuses Darrell weaved… then unloading on him.

Yeah, he was enjoying that. The phone finally quit ringing. Maybe he glared it into submission. Not even a full minute later, his phone beeped, signaling he just received a text message. Well, he had to give Darrell credit. He was a persistent fucker.

He returned to staring at the ceiling. Wow, he had never noticed how dingy it was before…. He didn’t spend a hell of a lot of time staring up at the ceiling. This was just pathetic. If ceiling watching was the only thing he could find to distract himself, he was in trouble. He sighed and sat up.

What he ought to do was answer the phone and get it over with, but he simply couldn’t make himself do it. Once he answered the phone and listened to Darrell’s excuses, he’d have to admit the relationship was over. Over before it even got started. Plus it annoyed the hell out of him that he lost such a good deal on a car, but he damn sure wasn’t going back there. He didn’t think Darrell would care one way or the other.

He changed out of his swim trunks and into a pair of regular shorts and a T-shirt. Since he had nothing better to do, he wasted a couple hours watching TV. Once that got boring, he wasted more time messing around on the computer. His cell phone rang a couple more times, but since it wasn’t the ringtone he used for work, he ignored it.

Evening rolled around and he fixed dinner. This was one weekend he’d be glad to see the back of.
