Chapter 6

Having lunch with Erika had been a start, but pulling a tiger’s tooth while the cat was conscious may have been easier than getting through her accounting report.

The pain he had caused her was obvious, and while she was trying to be brave and professional, he knew her. She was putting on a front. They may not have dated long, but they had dated long enough for him to fall in love with her. Long enough for him to know she was special. He had never been more himself around any other woman before her. Texting her, being near her again, he had forgotten how his blood pulsed through his veins in her presence. He came alive when he was with her.

God, he had been such an idiot. Why had he ever listened to his brother?

He pulled into his driveway when his burner phone beeped. Unfortunately, most of the messages had been from other women answering his ad late. While he wished he could throw his phone in the trash to keep from wading through the constant pile of texts he received, he knew he couldn’t. Erika still hadn’t put it all together. He’d even left his burner phone out on purpose. Had mentioned Sunny on purpose, and he purposefully stayed for lunch, hoping she would join him.

He wouldn’t tell Erika until Valentine’s Day that he was Neal, but he wouldn’t stop her from figuring it out either. He didn’t like deceiving her; he just wanted her back.

Reaching in his cup holder, he opened the burner phone. Erika.

—Hey you. It’s been a rough day. I had to have lunch with ‘the boss’—

The one good thing about being the secret man behind the texts was he got to find out what she really thought about him. No holds barred.—Really? How was that?—

—About as good as could be expected. I found out we have to sit with him at the Corporate V-day dinner. Woohoo!—

So, she didn’t want to sit by him. He wasn’t really surprised, but the notion still hurt.

—Don’t worry, I’ll protect you—

—We just have to convince him and everyone we’re in love—

That wouldn’t be a problem for him.

—I’m going to grab a cup of coffee—she wrote—Want to join?—

He threw his car in reverse and headed for the coffee shop. Neal wouldn’t be joining her, but Grayson would.

He turned the corner and drove the two miles to the shop. He eased his car into an empty spot and parked in front of Java Chipped Mugs. He scanned the sidewalks since it wasn’t far from her apartment. She wasn’t outside.

—Sorry, E—he texted—I’ll be out of the country for the next week and a half on business, but I’ll be back in time for V-day. Where do you work, anyway?—

Grayson had been contemplating all day how he was going to keep Erika away from Neal. This way, she might stop pushing to meet him face to face.

—Oh no. That’s a bummer. I’ll tell you where I work if you tell me where you work—

He peeked through the coffee shop windows and saw the back of her head.
