Chapter Nine
Nico had never been the kind of man to have trouble sleeping, so as he lay awake listening to the soft sounds of Cressidaâs breathing and staring at the strange ceiling, he didnât want to delve too deeply into why he was wide awake. This night had been anything but expected. That was a reasonâ¦one might even say a fairly decent reason for not sleeping.
Except as he rubbed his hand over his chest, he knew that wasnât it. He turned his head slightly and could just make out her form next to him. None of the details that he knew made up her face and body, but he knew she was there. Heâd slept with his fair share of women and usually just rolled over and zonked out, but this was Cressida. He couldnât help but remember the scars on her arms and legs which he guessed had come from her accident. He had wanted her. First, heâd wanted her business then once he met her, heâd wanted the woman.
He lay on his side watching her sleep. He hadnât realized before how much of her energy was spent on projecting strength until he looked at her face in repose. He didnât bring up her scars but they were there on her body. He saw how much sheâd had to recover from, but she never really dwelled on that.
Her quiet strength came instead from weaving. It wasnât hard to see how sheâd woven a new life for herself here in Whiskey River. How sheâd taken the broken basket of her life after her fiancé had died and slowly created a new, strong one for herself. Alone.
It wasnât lost on him that sheâd spent so much of the last ten years not creating connections to anyone. Though sheâd lived in Whiskey River a long time, both Logan and Avery had been unaware of that.
He knew heâd dared her to date him. Dared her to let him show her his love for Christmas so he could use that to get her as a client. He wasnât going to lie to himself about that. But heâd changed.
Sheâd changed him.
And that bothered him.
This was temporary. She was in his life until Christmas and then if things went wellâand they usually did for himâsheâd be his client. That was it. This wasnât the big love of his life like Mama and Pops had or like Jock had found with Delilah. This was a Christmas dare, nothing more.
He couldnât let himself forget that.
But he hadnât seen her until tonight. This crazy night that had been a bit of a roller coaster. The kind of coaster that normally he bolted in the other direction to get away from. It had been real and exciting and scary and lusty, and a million more things all tied to this woman.
Cressida Cormac.
Temporary lover. Yet heâd be lying if he didnât acknowledge that there was a part of him that felt a pull toward her heâd never experienced before. Like could it be love? He wondered but didnât want that to be the reason he wasnât sleeping.
