Their escape was special ops-worthy. Jeanette’s life had provided little adventure, so she was enthralled. Someone from the hospital had commandeered scrubs for them and ball caps for Walker and Maisie, who insisted on wearing the pink shirt Jeanette hadn’t had a chance to make into a dress yet. Jeanette had French-braided Maisie’s hair and fitted the tail of it through the hole at the back of her cap. She’d pulled her own up in a tight chignon to change her look.

Daisy Bear’s dress was well underway, though, and Maisie was overjoyed. She clung to her new friend as Jeanette carried her to help prevent a further connection to Walker, should he still be recognized.

The scrubs she’d been given were baggy, but Walker filled out his set of scrubs to dazzling effect. If he were a doctor, patient hearts would melt all over creation. He’d never get a day off.

But the grim look on his face, the tight jaw, reminded Jeanette that this situation was not only deadly serious for him and Maisie but also something with which he was all too familiar. She’d never considered that his seemingly-charmed life had any downside, but the steep price of fame had been etched into her memory by the events of the last day and a half.

Walker shouldered the backpack where supplies Dusty had rustled up would go. A change of clothes for him and for Maisie were inside, as well as one for her, though Jeanette had protested Walker paying for one for her, since she had a whole wardrobe at home, even if it wasn’t her more exciting creations that had been packed for the trip and hastily gathered by Hayley—but were still on Walker’s plane.

As someone who always practiced economy, the waste bothered her. She was overruled. Walker had pointed out that once they left the hospital, scrubs would draw attention to them, not make them blend in, so a change before the flight was wise. Dusty had promised to get her suitcase and more of Walker’s own wardrobe to them in the next day or two, but no one wanted to risk a connection being made if they were off-loaded from Walker’s plane and sent to Jackson’s friend Dominic’s at the other airfield.

She had no real use now for those outfits she’d made now, anyway. They had been intended as her portfolio to gain her notice in L.A., and she couldn’t imagine going back there. She did love every one of them, however, and even if she had nowhere to wear them in Sweetgrass, she didn’t like to think of all the hours she’d put into them being wasted. She hadn’t made them for Hayley or her crowd originally, anyway. She’d made them for herself, unsuitable for Sweetgrass or not.

“Ready?” Walker asked, one hand on the small of her back.

She barely repressed a delicious shiver. His hand was big and warm and brought back incredible memories of a man she was finding all too fascinating.

Like every other woman on the planet, she reminded herself.
