Chapter Eight

Two days later Macy was still avoiding talking to anyone about Chris. That included Abby, who had called her several times. But Macy just wasn’t ready to chat. As she hit Ignore on the cell phone yet again, she heard a rap at her door. She glanced up to see Abby standing there with her phone in hand.

“I can’t believe you aren’t at least going to answer my call,” Abby said.

Macy felt her face get hot. “I am…”

“Avoiding me,” Abby said.

“Come in and close my door and I will tell you,” Macy said.

Abby did as Macy asked, but instead of sitting in one of the guest chairs, she perched on the edge of Macy’s desk.

“Okay, spill, what’s so important you don’t have time for your good friend anymore.”

“I’ve been dating Chris Richardson.”

“The developer?” Abby asked.

“Yes.”

“Damn it. I wish I’d known that. I’m bringing another developer to town so that everyone knows I’m serious about my bid to be president.”

“Oh,” Macy said. “I guess competition is good.”

“Of course it is, but I aim to win this and that means Chris might not be in town as long as you’d like him to be,” Abby said.

Macy wasn’t worried about club business interfering in her life. “Chris and I have some history. I really needed to talk about this, but I didn’t know what to say.”

“Good thing I decided to stop by and check up on you,” Abby said. “Let’s get out of this office and go for a walk. You can tell me all about it.”

Macy saved her work and then left the office with her friend. There was a large park with several shade trees planted and a pond at the center of it near the Richardson Construction Company main offices. The two women went over there to walk and talk.

“What’s up?”

“Chris and I dated briefly in high school, but my dad didn’t think he was good enough for me and pressured me to break up with him, which I did.”

“I think I remember hearing something about that back in school. But you’ve never mentioned anything about it,” Abby said.

“It was high school and lately I’ve had something else to talk about.”

“Agreed. Let me say once again how happy I am that you have no more surgeries to go through.”

“Thanks,” Macy said.

“Does your dad object to you dating Chris now?” Abby asked. “I don’t see what his grounds would be. I looked Richardson up on the internet and he’s very successful.”

“I have no idea how my dad feels,” Macy said. The hot August morning was starting to make her feel a little sweaty. “I haven’t said anything to him about it.”

“Why not? Are you afraid to?” Abby asked.

“I don’t know. Maybe. It wasn’t like there was an official let’s-start-dating-again discussion. We just started doing things together and it keeps getting more serious… I think I’m falling for him,” Macy said. “I feel like it’s too soon after my surgery. What if the emotions are some sort of mirage?”

Abby wrapped her arm around Macy’s shoulders, hugging her close for just a minute.
