KATE PARKED AT THE SIDE of the house as Mitch had instructed her to do. The sun had set several minutes ago so it wasn’t dark yet but once it was, her car wouldn’t be visible from the road or the driveway. Tonight Mitch would show her how to use the monitoring equipment, and tomorrow a couple of the Sugarloaf hands would round up and move the cattle to the Colters’ back pasture.

After that, word would spread quickly. By supper, half the people in the county would know that the Colter ranch was back in business, and by breakfast the next morning the other half would have caught up on the news.She stood at the front door, poised to knock, firmly reminding herself that all she had to do was treat Mitch like one of her brothers. That was the only way they’d get through however many nights they’d be stuck together. If she forced herself to think of him the way she did Clint or Joe, then maybe she wouldn’t lie in bed, staring at the ceiling, unable to sleep, wondering what it would be like to kiss him. Really kiss him.

That thought alone was enough to make her stomach tighten. Kissing Mitch had been the stuff of dreams for so much of her life. Wanting to do a lot more than kiss was a relatively recent addition to her repertoire. Which made it imperative that she keep her wits about her, and not let her attraction to him get out of hand.

She wasn’t an idiot. She knew she was still reeling from Dennis’s betrayal. Which was no time to even think about sex. Even if she believed with all her heart that it was nothing more than scratching that itch, would she be right? Or would she wake up one day and realize she’d used her good friend to make herself feel better? No matter how she sliced it, she had to keep her legs crossed and her thoughts pure.

Just as she was about to knock, her fist still raised in midair, he opened the door. “Hey,” Mitch said, and stepped back. His hair was damp, his chin smooth as if he’d just shaved. He smelled clean and deliciously male, and not only did she clench her stomach but she had to press her legs together to stop the thrum. So much for pure thoughts. “Come on in.”

“I parked where you told me,” she said, feeling nervous suddenly. She’d purposely left her hair in the messy ponytail she favored when she wasn’t going anywhere, and she’d kept her makeup to a minimum. After all, she didn’t get made up for Clint or Joe.

“Good.” He closed the door and then led her to the stairs. “You want something before we go up?”

“Maybe later.” Her gaze followed the cherry banister to the second floor. “Is that where you installed the monitors?”

“Better up there in case company stops by.” He studied her for a moment, and then started up the stairs.

She held back just far enough to get a good view of his backside.
