The special government plane Professor Louis Sherman had talked about was the personal plane of the American Secretary of State. Having completed a round of emergency talks with the Saudi leaders about the oil production crisis and Saudi-Iranian relations, the Secretary of State made a quick stop on the way back to the United States to meet with the Israeli Prime Minister and Foreign Minister. The three Israeli passengers were smuggled into the airport. They were required to leave their cellphones in Israel, and hastily scrawled the phone numbers of their family and important contacts before boarding. They would get new, highly-encrypted phones when they reached their destination. After a brief security check, they boarded with their suitcases directly onto the plane awaiting the return of the Secretary of State. An airport vehicle with a lifting platform raised the wheelchair Professor Teleki was sitting on level to the plane door. There, he exchanged his chair for crutches. The three were led to seats at the rear of the plane, where the media reporters accompanying the journeys of the Secretary usually sat. As the current flight was covert, the plane was empty. Amir and Karin sat next to each other, he constantly clinging to her hand. Teleki grabbed the seat on the other side of the aisle. A stewardess offered them refreshments with a smile. Professor Teleki examined the daily paper he had brought with him onto the plane. His eyes swept over the headlines. Russia was badly hurt. Itâs oil and gas reserves, the primary source of foreign currency, were being rapidly exhausted. The Russian President had declared a state of national emergency following riots breaking out in Moscow. NATO was mobilizing forces along the borders of Western Europe in order to be prepared for any scenario, including massive refugee movements. Chinese censorship was preventing a clear picture from emerging about developments in the East Asian giant, but it was increasingly clear that chaos was engulfing at least some of its regions. Sub-Saharan Africa had long since ceased being a matter of concern for the rest of the world and its various nations were left to flounder on their own. Nor was there any good news on the climatic front. A report on the inner page of the paper laconically reported extreme climatic events around the globe.
They continued to wait for the plane to take off. Professor Teleki put down his paper and stared out at the twilight scenery, darkening before the fall of night. Amir carried on a whispered conversation with Karin, trying to raise her spirits, depressed after her separation from her mother. Two hours after they boarded the plane, a convoy of vehicles arrived and parked below the plane. The American Secretary of State left the first car, together with the Israeli Foreign Minister. The two shook hands, and the Secretary then boarded the plane without any additional delays, accompanied by three more people. They entered the cabins at the front on the plane without even glancing down the aisle.
