Chapter 9

The walk home in the moonlight is chilly, but the way the light from the moon gleams off the leftover snow adds a sparkle to the forested scenery and makes the night look magical. It is probably one of the most unexpectedly fun Christmas Eve’s I’ve ever had, and I smile at the memories I’ve made today. The last hundred yards or so, the trek up the mountain to the cabin gets harder. The light snow flurries that are falling add to the slickness of the road. I slip as I place my foot carelessly on an upturned rock and catch myself, looking up at the night sky.

Deep blue greets me, the moon a hazy halo hung low in the sky. The crisp air is rare during snowfall, and I sigh with pleasure as the tiny flakes hit my face, landing on my nose and cheeks. I close my eyes, knowing my face shows my happiness, but there is worry there too. All the what ifs seem to crash down around me at once. What if Jax and I can’t keep it together long distance? What if my brother gets angry for “stealing” his friend, and it’s awkward? What if my mom freaks out, and her and Mrs. McKay start planning our wedding?

I feel a light touch on the side of my face, and I turn my head into Cowboy’s hand. My Cowboy.

“What are you thinking about, Freckles?” he whispers a hair away from my face, my eyes still closed.

I take a deep breath, my heartbeat quickening. My chest heaves up and down as my body becomes excited by his nearness.

“I’m thinking about the what ifs,” I whisper back, truthfully.

“Ah, Freckles, there are no what ifs, only this moment and the two of us in it.” I open my eyes and look into his, seeing the kindness that lingers there. “Stay with me in this moment, Freckles. Make it ours.”

And my breath catches as he leans into to me, the heat of his body setting mine on fire as his lips claim mine. The kiss is tender and sweet and over way too soon in my opinion, but I feel so much in it. Before me stands a man that will not objectify me, a man strong enough to see the worth of respect, and a man sweet enough to share a peaceful moment with me instead of turning every kiss into a frenzy of uncontrolled passion and debasing our feelings as just lust. And in this moment my heart explodes with feeling.

As I stand in his arms, reveling in the idea of us, I hear Aimee’s laugh and open my eyes just in time to see the shower of an excruciatingly cold burst of snow that hits me as the snowball she threw hits Jax in the head and shatters all around us. I shriek with delight as Jax takes off after her, stooping down to grab some snow and forming a snowball as he runs. God, that was cold, I cringe and try to shake off the freezing snow still left in my collar and on my face.
