Tomorrow, Devon thought dully as she prepared for bed. Tomorrow she’d be climbing in bed with Winston, allowing him to use her body in the same way Diablo had. How could she bear it? How could she stand to have another man touch her when it was only Diablo she desired, only Diablo she loved? Yet Devon realized that her child’s future depended on her wedding Winston. There’d be talk enough when her child came early, and sooner or later Winston would have to be told.

Sighing despondently, Devon still wasn’t certain she could actually marry Winston. Perhaps she’d confess everything to her father in the morning and accept his condemnation.

Facing away from the partially open window, Devon found that her hopes of finding sleep were not to be realized. It was long past midnight and a chilling breeze blew through the narrow opening past the fluttering curtains, bringing a shiver to Devon’s slight form. She did not see the figure dressed in unrelieved black who had just stepped through the opening and stood very still, blending into the shadows. A sudden chill swept through her, and Devon arose and walked toward the window, certain that the draft was preventing her from sleep.

Just enough moonlight danced in the room to illuminate Devon’s face. Diablo’s silver eyes narrowed with hatred as he greedily devoured her entrancing face and form. Though he could barely stand the sight of the traitorous bitch, it didn’t stop him from appreciating her beauty. His hands clenched tightly at his sides as he struggled to control his raging temper. He wanted Devon to know exactly why he was going to kill her. He was determined that she hear all the gruesome details of the unprovoked attack on innocent people before she died. Diablo wanted her to realize fully what terrible havoc she had wrought by betraying the secret of Paradise.

Devon reached the window and lowered it. But something had distracted her. She sensed she was not alone, and every nerve in her body screamed with awareness. How many times had she inhaled that spicy, musky odor while held so tenderly in those strong arms? She would recognize his scent anywhere, know the moment he walked into the room even if she were blindfolded.

“Diablo ” The name whispered across her lips like a summer breeze, soft and yearning—and oh so gentle.

Diablo stepped from the shadows, the light from the window falling across the stark planes of his face. Devon gasped, the hatred blazing from his silver eyes so fierce that she retreated in alarm. Like a stalking panther Diablo followed, grasping her shoulder and spinning her around to face him. Devon winced, his cruel grip confusing her. Never had he touched her with anything but tenderness. Had he changed so completely because she had left him? Or was it because she had left with Le Vautour?

“Diablo, please! You’re hurting me.”

“You traitorous bitch! The reason I didn’t kill you immediately is because I wanted you to know what you’re dying for.
