Chapter 6

Ryley’s heart was pounding as hard as it usually did when he hit the gym and did a cycling workout. Why am I so affected by the thought of having sex with Kallie? It’s not like I haven’t had a ton of practice since the last time we were together. For some reason though, it felt like a betrayal thinking about his previous conquests. She didn’t deserve that. After what she’d been through with Lena, and what she’d achieved since then, Kallie deserved more.

I did leave her in the past. I did leave to follow my dreams and I wasn’t there for her at the time she needed me most.

He linked his fingers through hers and led her inside through the empty restaurant. The staff had backed right off and were out of sight, no doubt hanging out in the kitchen. He paid them enough to cater to his every whim, and that included discretion when he needed it. They would know not to disturb him unless he requested it.

On the other side of the restaurant, through the internal foyer, was a private elevator that led to his secluded suite. He’d had the rooms decorated when he purchased the property, but only stayed here a handful of times since then. His favorite home out of several, and yet he barely had time to enjoy it.

What would Kallie think? Would his style please her? Would she appreciate the view from the floor-to-ceiling windows in the main bedroom? The elevator door slid open and she slipped out just behind him, her hand still clasped in his. Her grip felt relaxed, but he knew it was deceptive. Her rapid breathing and failure to look him directly in the eye when they stopped at his bedroom door gave away her inner anxiety.

“I need to tell you a couple of things before we do this, Kal.” He wanted her to feel good about this night, and didn’t know how else to achieve that, other than truth.

Finally, she raised her eyes to meet his. At the moment they were darker than usual and brimming with some kind of deep emotion. One eyebrow lifted, as if silently encouraging him to continue. “Firstly, I’ve slept around, but I always try and practice safe sex, and I get tested on a regular basis. Just had my latest results this week, and all’s clear.”

“I...okay. I guess I hadn’t thought of—”

“Secondly, and this is something I really want you to hear. I’ve never brought a woman here, for sex. Not in the two years I’ve owned this place. Tania’s been here, of course, and some of the other women in my team, but that’s all been business-related. You’ll...well, to be honest you’ll be the first to stay here with me in a personal capacity.”

Her cheeks were already flushed, and they darkened even more when he spoke. But her lips curved up a little as if she liked what he’d just said.

“Can I ask why not? I mean...yeah, just...why not?”

She was flustered.
