Without speaking, the soldier beats her until she no longer moves.

I cannot save her. I try to cradle my mother’s body, but he pushes me away as though I am a sack of jasmine rice. He slings her over his shoulder and heads to the sludgy riverbank.

He guts her with a tiny pocket knife, then he stuffs her insides full of round black pebbles.

“Make yourself useful,” he says, waving his pistol at me. I hurriedly collect more jagged rocks and pebbles on the beach.

“What is she?” he asks. He holds the winter-cold gun against my temple.

“She’s my mother,” I sob. Shaking, I take his proffered fishing needle, quickly sew shut her intestines.

I help him throw my mother’s body in the deepest part of Hangzhou Bay.
