âRaph!â cried Leonardo. He dropped to one knee beside the badly-beaten form.
April pressed a fist to her mouth in horror. She hardly dared to ask. âIs heâ¦?â
Leonardo touched his brother's neck, relieved to find a pulse. But it was dangerously faint. âNo, he's alive. Barely.â He looked up, his battle instincts kicking into action. âDon, Mike,â he said urgently, âcover theâ¦â
It was too late. Multiple crashes splintered the air as every window in the apartment was broken in. Swarms of black-clad Foot ninja burst in. Some had shuriken or other exotic weapons, but most were armed with ninjato-swords. The setting sun glinted off the straight blades as they paced in around their prey.
âWhoa!â said Michaelangelo. âAnd I thought insurance salesmen were pushy.â
The three Turtles formed a circle to protect April and their wounded brother. The Foot moved nearer.
There was a metallic sigh as Leonardo's katana left its oiled sheath. Michaelangelo gritted his teeth and swung his nunchuku-flail, chopping the air like a rotor. Donatello swung his bo-staff into ready position, holding it poised like a javelin to thrust at any of the Foot ninja who came too close.
The trio presented a fearsome sight. Even a novice in the martial arts could discern, from their controlled movements and implacable focus, that they were masters of their weapons.
But they were outnumbered almost three to one. And, given reckless courage by their superior numbers, the first of The Foot shrieked battlecries as they ran in for the attack.
The first of them wielded a nunchuku. Seeing this, Michaelangelo grinned. âAhh, a fellow âchuckerâ, eh?â He whipped the flail around his body in a show of dexterity. It made great whooshing sounds as it cleaved through the air.
The Foot stopped short. Their own nunchuku-wielder sniggered contemptuously and duplicated Michaelangelo's movements but with even more speed and force. He ended with one shaft of the flail tucked under his arm in the classic Bruce Lee posture, his show of intimidation complete.
Or so he thought. But he was rather taken aback when Michaelangelo's only response was to laugh. The Turtle repeated his earlier display of skill, but this time holding nothing back. Now it was clear that he had barely been working up a sweat the first time. His technique completely outclassed The Foot champion's efforts. His flail swung up, down, right and left faster than the eye could follow, its motion making a single continuous swishing humâ¦
The Foot with the nunchuku gulped, and those next to him fell back a step. Suddenly Michaelangelo's nunchuku lashed out, felling him with a single crunching blow to the forehead.
âMy advice is to keep practising,â remarked Michaelangelo to his unconscious foe.
By demonstrating his superiority, Michaelangelo had thrown the Foot warriors off-balance while giving the Turtles an advantage in morale. Donatello and Leonardo were quick to capitalize, launching themselves into the fray with gusto.
Donatello found himself facing a talkative Foot. âI'm gonna turn you into turtle soupâ¦â hissed the man.
âOh, man,â replied Donatello, reacting with a wince. ââ¯âTurtle soupâ? Are you
