August and September

In August 1974, Bundy relocated to Utah. Ostensibly, Bundy’s reasoning for this move was that he was not enjoying studying for his law degree at the University of Puget Sound. Something about the ambiance at UPS didn’t quite agree with Bundy, and he convinced his girlfriend Liz that he would do better at the University of Utah. Bundy received his admissions letter for Utah in August and on September 2, he left his life in Washington State to start a new one in Salt Lake City, Utah.

One of Bundy’s last-ditch attempts to buy time before his execution concerned this trip from Washington to Utah. Bundy claims that while driving through Boise, Idaho on the evening of September 2, he picked up a hitchhiker who he attacked with a crowbar, raped, and killed before dumping the girl’s body. Bundy says the hitchhiker was maybe 16 to 18 years old and that he did not know her name and was unable to describe her in any detail. It’s possible that Bundy made up this murder in the hopes that investigators would push back the date of his execution to quiz him further, but it’s also possible that this hitchhiking girl is yet another one of Bundy’s victims whose remains were not found.

Bundy took up residence in a rented room on First Avenue, Salt Lake City, Utah, close to the University of Utah campus. Liz had helped Bundy find this room as her parents lived in Utah and she was familiar with the area. While Liz expected Bundy to knuckle down in Utah and study hard towards his law degree, he only attended class at the University of Utah a handful of times, committing himself instead to a devastating six-week killing spree that claimed the lives of another four women. In Washington, what became known as the “Ted murders” were all over the news, but in Utah, few had heard about the killer on the loose hundreds of miles away.
