Chapter 15 ~ Linda

I must be crazy. Why was I letting Ian stay at the house? Oh yeah, because his daughter wanted him to. For what must have been the thirtieth time, I wondered again what I was doing.

What were Ian and I going to talk about? We hadn’t seen each other in years. For all I knew he was married or had a girlfriend someplace. I palmed my forehead, I should have asked.

I did call Casey and tell her what was up. Ian was a stranger, and I wanted someone to know we had a stranger in our home. Look how it had almost turned out with her. While on the phone with Casey, I asked her to talk to Thad about Ian’s things. Two hours later, Thad knocked on the door, with not one suitcase, but three. Okay, only two were suitcases, one was a duffle bag. I stared at the three bags sitting in my tiny entranceway and wondered which one held his clothes.

Thad also let me know he had run Ian through the system, and he didn’t have any outstanding warrants or arrests out there. The thought that he might seemed ludicrous until I thought of Casey again, and then I found myself very thankful that Thad had checked for me.

It felt like a huge invasion of privacy to be going through Ian’s bags, but I sucked it up and unzipped the largest one. Inside were heavy sweatshirts and thermals. I pulled out a sweatshirt and went to the next suitcase. I found t-shirts and track pants in that one and figured those were the easiest and most comfortable for him to put on.

In the last bag, I found a pair of sneakers, socks, and, oh lord, he wore boxer briefs, in colors, no less. Paul was a tighty-whitey kind of guy, and I had to admit that the thought of Ian wearing colored boxer shorts kind of turned me on—enough so that my cheeks flushed as I folded a pair of purple ones and stuck them in a small bag with his other stuff. I pulled out a leather bag that was inside the duffle and unzipped it. The scent of Ian’s aftershave wafted up to me, and I closed my eyes. It wasn’t the same one he had worn as a young man, but it was equally intoxicating.

Oh, stop with the drama, woman!

I zipped the bag back up and went to shove it into the one for the hospital. A little piece of paper in a small side pocket caught my attention, and I stared at it for a moment. It looked like the corner of a picture.

What if it was his girlfriend? Should I look at it?

No, leave it alone. It’s none of your business.

I pushed the leather bag in with the other things and put it down. I contemplated unpacking for him, and finally just decided to do it after shifting a few of my storage things around.

The whole time I unpacked his stuff, I kept glancing back at the bag for the hospital.
