Cole had been watching from the barn for Shasta’s car and moved out to meet her as she pulled up to the house and parked next to his pickup. Really looked like a used car lot when everyone was home, but today his two youngest brothers were making a grocery run in town and had Zac’s truck. Jesse’s truck was parked on the other side of his, but he wasn’t sure where Jesse was or what he was doing. Nate’s truck was on the other side of the big cotton wood in the yard.

He opened Shasta’s door and pulled her close for a kiss. There was a note of desperation in it. He had really missed her, and he let it show. Resting his forehead against hers they sat there for a few heart beats, it felt so good to be together. He wanted more than anything to make this more permanent but knew that Shasta was just beginning to accept the relationship. It would be a while before she was ready to accept marriage. He wondered if it would affect her career and if it did what would she choose…a life at the Sheriff’s office or a life with him. He hoped it never came to a choice, he wanted her to have everything she wanted.

But Cole was worried. The rose this week had shaken him and there was also a part of him that feared losing her. These threats and the weird gifts made him think someone wanted to cause her harm. Nothing had happened on the ranch for a while, so he was beginning to think it wasn’t RUNDA that was threatening her, but it hadn’t been that long ago Noreena’s life was threatened. They’d thought RUNDA then too, but it had been two people from her high school.

Grabbing her bag, he walked her to the house which smelled like the green chili cooking in the Crockpot. The combination of Anaheim peppers, tomatoes, pork, and cumin was a southwest favorite. Tonight, they were going to have it over the top of ground beef and refried bean burritos. Cole’s mouth watered at the smell.

“Smells so good.” Shasta said following him though the house. They seemed to be alone. As they entered the bedroom Shasta hoped they’d be able to take advantage of an empty house. Cole seemed to have the same idea and with nothing pressing on his afternoon schedule he closed the door behind her and pulled her towards the bed.
