Chapter Seven

Ava

After class, I’m not quick enough getting across the open square between the building wings.

Rita catches up to me. “Hey, human!”

Damn. I was hoping this pissy chick might have forgotten about me during a two hour-long physics class, but apparently not.

I turn to face her, flashing the brightest smile I can muster.

“Hi. Rita, is it?”

“Don’t say my name, trash.” She scowls. “I’ll give you a free pass since you obviously know nothing. But you need to learn something fast. There’s a natural order around here, and humans don’t even get a mention on the list.”

My smile falls along with the weight dragging through my stomach. “Let me guess; you’re at the top?”

“Yes, elementals are the nature-ordained supreme beings.”

Far out! Is this girl for real? Well, I’m pretty proud of being human—not that I needed to be before today—and I’m not going to roll over for some being with a god complex in a world I don’t even want to be visiting.

“Why?”

She straightens and tosses her hair. “Elementals are superior in every way. We command the forces of nature, and our emperor rules the world. Learn your place, and stop wasting people’s time, like Chengan. You’re doing him no favors.”

I snort. It’s not my world. “What’s so superior about elementals? And Chen didn’t seem to think I was wasting his time.”

Her eyes widen. “Chen? You—” A tremor passes through her upper body. “You want to know why we are superior? Because we can do things like this.”

She snaps her fingers, and a glassy bubble, the size of my bedroom, forms around us. The grassy square fades to a blur behind the opal-colored barrier, deepening and distorting the clusters of students and buildings behind her. Looking from the glossy magic to her, I gulp at the ugly twist of Rita’s face.

This is bad.

“You wanted to know what’s special about us? Well, I can close you in here and do whatever I like with no one to stop me! Qi is everything here.”

As she steps closer, a ripple behind her catches my attention. A tall guy with a cleanly-shaved face, spiked blond hair and a rigid set to his mouth steps into the bubble. He wears the school uniform, but across his chest hang rows of gold chains, fixed to rings in each shoulder. When he looks from Rita to me, I see an ornate piece of gold jewelry threaded through a piercing in his left lobe and snaking over the top of his ear. He’s at least a foot taller than me.

My already racing pulse stutters at the sight of him. There’s no doubt he’s handsome, but the cold look on his face makes me want to be far, far away from here. From the rigid set of his posture and controlled demeanor to the flashy gold bling, he exudes authority, a tangible presence that makes it hard to breathe.

Rita continues her tirade, apparently unaware of his presence. “You little bitch! You think you can come in here and do whatever the hell you like as if the rules don’t apply to you? Learn this one thing.
