CHAPTER TWELVE

BABY

Normally when I meet a girl, I’m not nervous, but this is Ivy. She’s not just some girl. She’s a woman—my woman, for that matter, after last night.

My knees wobble slightly, and my heart beat picks up as I make my way through the sand to the boulders I like to nestle between. I brought her here the night we met thinking it would bring her some peace.

For me, this is the best spot to think and decompress, and something in her eyes that night told me she needed that. This place has always been mine, but I’m more than happy to share it with her if it brings her any sort of comfort.

It’s secluded and quiet. The perfect place to relax and not think about the fucked-up dynamics of the world or my family. Hell, it even serves as a nice spot to do…other things. I catch myself smiling at the memory of Ivy the first night we met in this very spot. And the thought of seeing her again has me feeling like a boy with his first boner—giddy and excited.

But there is a touch or terror, too, at the thought of her trying to deny what we clearly have.

Last night was different, though. She finally crossed the line I’ve been trying to coax her over for weeks. She asked for me—wanted me—and now I don’t want to let her go. Not that I ever planned to anyway.

Sliding down the rocks, I let my feet dangle over the edge of them and pull out the same pastries I bought her the night of the Christmas party, then set the box beside me. Once they’re settled, I pull the unlit joint from my lips and tuck it behind my ear and wait.

I stare out at the water and watch the waves meet the sand for a few minutes before I movement scuffles behind me. Glancing over my shoulder, I see Ivy starting to climb over the barrier of rocks.

Standing, I walk to her, then bend down and grab her hand. “Careful, Momma.”

Once she’s on top of the rocks, I wrap my arms around her waist and pull her into me. I try to kiss her, but she dodges me, only letting my lips hit the corner of her mouth.

She smiles tightly, acting as if that wasn’t a hit to my ego, and immediately, I can feel the tension rolling off her, and the smile that found my lips when I saw her falls.

“Thanks.” She pulls away from me and moves to the edge of the rocks.

Tipping my head, I examine her for a moment and try to figure out what’s up. “What’s wrong?”

She sucks in a breath before sitting. “We can’t keep doing this, Ashton.”

I let out a low laugh and sit beside her. “We’re back to this?” I shake my head. “Is that what you wanted to talk about?”

She breaks her stare from the water and looks at me, ignoring my question. “I’m married.”

I open my mouth to let the line I’ve had in my head slide out.
