Chapter 19

Zayne

I can’t believe I finally have her back. Being without Hallie is like trying to breathe without lungs, staying alive without a heart beating in my chest. Every moment of being without her has been agony for me. Even when I had a distraction, it was never enough to keep my mind off her.

Now that we’re in the car and on our way to the border, it feels bittersweet. We’re finally leaving, and I couldn’t be gladder. Mexico will always be a fucking nightmare for me, no matter how much time goes by. There’s no way I could ever forget the horrors I lived in this country, and I would rather die than come back.

Hallie is quiet in the back, rubbing the woman’s back on one side, and on the other side, the guy sleeps on her lap. They seem to feel safe with her, and I wonder how much she has cared for them if they seem to trust her this much. Judging by how she looks right now, I’d go on a limb to say she gave herself over for them. Or maybe she didn’t have a choice. All I know is that the cuts on her face and lip, her swollen eye, her bruised body, and her dislocated shoulder tell a story of how she spent most of her time. I can’t think about everything else that happened at the moment. I know it might be selfish of me, but I also need time to process. She’s never been the kind of person to give up; that’s always been me. Was this another act of bravery? Did she refuse something, and that’s why they tortured her? Knowing Hals, it’s entirely possible.

Damien is driving at a steady pace to not raise any suspicions. I personally don’t think there’s anyone else following us, especially since they wouldn’t know about all the people that just died in that house yet. All the bodyguards were taken out, and so were the guests.

What pisses me off is that Damien’s father’s men never showed up. We would've never made it out if it weren’t for Diego and Armando helping us. There’s no way I could’ve taken out all the guards while Damien shot everyone else, without one of us getting killed. It would’ve been a colossal failure. But these guys came through, and that’s all that matters to me. As for the guy sitting next to me… well, that’s a different story.

His expression is somber as he drives, and I almost want to pat his shoulder. I know he would hate it though, so I refrain. It’s funny how much we hated each other not too long ago, yet now it feels like we can actually get along. We haven’t been fighting, and even though I felt a surge of jealousy and rage when I saw him kissing Hallie outside the car, I knew to stay back and shut the fuck up about it. Pressuring her right now isn’t going to make anything better, mainly when she was the one who kissed him.
