I’M NOT SURE why, but I’m not surprised when I wake up to find Piper has snuck out and left early. I am surprised that I’m bummed about it. “Thanks for abandoning me last night,” Trevis says as I walk into the kitchen.

“Sorry. Couldn’t be helped. What time did you get back?”

“Right around the time Piper said you were the one with the hands of a god and not Sofia.”

I smirk at the memory.

“I do not appreciate having to listen to y’all.”

“Sorry. It won’t happen again for a little while since we’re leaving on a road trip. Are you going to be okay here by yourself?”

“I was actually thinking of going to Mom and Dad’s before heading back to Russia.” His cheeks turn pink, so I know exactly why he’s planning to head back early. The girl.

“Are you sure?” I ask anyway. Can’t say I blame him. Why would he want to hang around when I won’t even be here?

“Yeah. I’ll leave about the same time you do.”

Now, I feel bad about bailing on him last night at the bar, but can’t say I regret it. Not after what happened with Piper. However, I do stay and eat breakfast with him. When I go to practice, I avoid the area where Piper works. She might not want to see me so soon after she left without even waking me up to say goodbye. When I have to go see Sofia, I use the entrance from the locker room.

“How are you doing today, Tanner?” she asks when I walk in.

“Pretty good. How about you? Baby Foster the Second easing up on you?”

“Yeah. I’m getting to the part where I feel good and not bad all the time.”

“That’s good to hear. Sucks you’re not traveling with us anymore.”

“That’s what happens when your sister and the father of your children own the company. I tried to go, but they outvoted me and reminded me that someone needs to stay home with Grant. It’s bad enough that he goes that long without Blake. I don’t want him to go that long without me, too. Then again, since this is our baseball team, I tried to talk them into letting Grant come with us. I can do my job with him around, but that was shut down, too.” She still sounds a little sad.

“Oh, come on. Think of it as a vacation away from Grumpy.”

She presses a bit hard into my calf. “I happen to like Grumpy. Anyway, you seem to be calmer these days. Piper must be really helping you.”

I tense. “You know about that?”

“Yeah, sorry. I swear, we haven’t told anyone. Doc just wanted us to be aware of it.”
