Chapter Eighteen
Tobias looked around – okay. This was not where he wanted to be. The dingy walls of his childhood bedroom mocked him. X-men posters on the wall, his cramped desk where he tried so hard to do his homework late at night. He was lying in his tiny cot, his parents not believing that he deserved anything bigger because he’d always been small for a shifter child. Christ! He hadn’t dreamed of this place in years. As he became aware of footsteps coming down the hallway, he shivered as he remembered the reason why. This room was the focus of some of his worst nightmares.
The creak of the door and then that evil laugh. Tobias shivered again. No. This couldn’t be happening. He was a grown man with two big mates, living in a pack full of people who cared about him. Not stuck in some bedroom, in a skinny frame, fearing for his sanity. He looked down at his body and his heart sank as he took in the scrawny pale limbs, pigeon chest where every rib was outlined and then the hollow dip signifying the number of meals he’d missed. No. It just wasn’t fair. He wasn’t about to go through the torture he knew was coming, not in the dream world. He needed to wake the fuck up and now!
His child-self pinched his arm, but the walls stayed the same. The next thing Tobias knew was the leering face of his brother peering at him over his thin blanket. Lenny had the mulish face of an arrogant teenager; long thick hair, a wide nose and thick lips that were twisted in a cruel snarl. Already having gone through his first shift, Lenny had found out he was a beta wolf, but any sign of the caring gene that betas were blessed with was missing from his DNA.
“You stole my steak tonight, you little runt. Since when did someone like you deserve meat?” Lenny’s voice was low and mean, although Tobias never knew why his brother kept his voice quiet. It wasn’t as though his parents would do anything if they knew what Lenny got up to at night. Hell, his father would probably pat Lenny on the head and show off to the Alpha.
A slap around his ears reminded Tobias that his brother was waiting for an answer. Although his adult brain, housed in his child-self body already knew from years of experience it didn’t matter what he said in his defense. Lenny was never interested in words. But his brother would still expect Tobias to give some semblance of an answer.
“I didn’t touch anything. I haven’t been in the kitchen for days.”
Another thump around the ears, this time accompanied with a low growl. “You’re a fucking liar as well as a thief,” Lenny snarled. “Why Dad didn’t drown you at birth, I’ll never know. You’re a waste of space, a nothing, a weakling…”
Tobias tried to tune out the words. In a strange way, as long as Lenny kept talking, Tobias was safe.
