Chapter Ten
CONFRONTING THE PAST
I Know the Thought of Confronting Your Past Terrifies You.
It Terrifies Every Man.
But Sometimes We Don't Do It for Ourselves.
We Do it for the People We Love More Than Ourselves.
- Colleen Hoover

I killed the engine in front of my fatherâs house before settling back in my seat and staring at the mansion in front of me. I looked forward to going in there and asking him for a f*cking favor about as much as one looked forward to placing the barrel of a shotgun in their mouth and pulling the f*cking trigger.
But what other choice did I have?
In tracking down the financial institute that owned the Armstrongs' portfolios, stocks, and bonds, Iâve run into a bit of a roadblock. I initially thought their bank, Liberty Trust, to be a Chicago institute, only to find out itâs an offshoot of a bigger bank. A much bigger bankâ¦
Maximus Banking and Financial Corpâ¦
An institute that caters to only the 1 percent. Every member on its board and even its shareholders were untouchable. This was the kind of wealth that wasnât reported by Forbes because it was just too opprobrious to rub it in the faces of us mere mortals.
How the hell Mrs. Armstrong and her crooked-ass son got involved with them is beyond me. Although itâs true the Armstrongs are wealthyâ¦They werenât 1 percent wealthy. And in order to force Mrs. Armstrongâs hand with the deed to the Tea Shop, I now needed to have a little chat with the guy at the very top because the bigwigs over their Chicago branch didnât have the power to help me.
I know this may come as a surprise to most of you, but believe it or not, there are some circles that even I couldnât get into without the proper introduction. And the top of the Maximus Corp was one of them.
They are what we in the industry call banking royalty. Nathan Maximus is most certainly one of the kings of the financial world. He inherited the majority shares of the bank from his father, whose father opened the first branch in New York just after the Great Depression. Word on the streetsâ¦
LOL! My badâ¦word at country clubs across America is that old Nathan is aging out and is due to pass down his shares to his son, crowned prince, Lance Maximus.
Now from what Iâve told you guys thus far, you would think the guy at the top of the Maximus Corporation is either old Nathan or Lanceâ¦right?
Wrong!
Allow me to explain. There is no secret that at a certain point in the power and money game, the supernatural becomes involved. History tells tales of great rulers and their learned men or women. Back then, these special people were called different things.
In the palace of the king, this person would have been called a diviner or a soothsayer. On a chessboard, they would be represented by the bishop piece. But in modern times, they go by the simple title Adviser.
Although simple, donât sleep on their importance to the ruler.
