One patient I saw was a beautiful liver-and-white pointer with a very docile face and a very relaxed owner. She was only in for a vaccination and I was chatting to him and stroking her ears as I did so. I finished what we were saying and got down on my knees in front of this calmly sitting dog. I looked at her eyes and ears and felt all round her face to check her lymph nodes were normal, felt down her chest and then picked up the end of my stethoscope and put the ear pieces in. I leaned forward and slid the stethoscope onto the side of her chest to start checking her heart. It was at this point that with not a growl or snarl of warning she sprang at my face, teeth bared, and snapped. My face, at the time, was about six inches from her nose and it was a very close call. My cat-like reflexes had made me retreat before I even consciously registered what had happened. To my absolute amazement her owner didn't bat an eyelid as he said, 'Sorry. She does that.'
