Casey tried to like Georgie, in the beginning, because of her love for Verushka, but it just didn’t work out. When the elegant black queen, Chenille, tells the story, she starts with the day she told Casey that Georgie was on parole. She said she knew it because Georgie’s wife was the new cook at the nursing home where she and Pauline worked during the day.

“I’m gonna tell Verushka and end this now,” Casey vowed angrily.

“You can’t tell people what they don’t want to hear,” Chenille said. “Georgie’s not very bright. Why don’t we just wait for him to screw up?”

Casey was unconvinced. “If it was me, I’d want to know.”

“Would you?” Chenille wondered out loud.

The question lay there between them.
