PART FOUR

SHADY

CHAPTER 21

ALONE

My body shook uncontrollably. I hunched in the corner of the cold metal box. It smelled strongly of the cleaning fluid that Lana used. But underneath lay the faint scent of animals. And death.

The beast stayed silent, but more beasts arrived and ‘mans moved quickly outside.

“Did you find her?” A voice spoke outside my cage.

“Nah, she took off across the highway. I thought she’d get hit, but she made it across. We’ll probably get a call later.” A metal handle clanked, and I watched my door, but it didn’t open.

Outside, Critter shrieked. I leapt at the closed mouth of the beast and struck at the metal with my forelegs. I scrabbled against it with my claws, bit it and hurtled myself into the closed mouth. I slammed my shoulders against it.

No use.

My legs buckled. I collapsed to the floor gasping like a fish yanked from a pond. My heart pounded, and I saw a vision of Rose in the field behind Lana’s house, her red, teardrop ears lifting as I barked a greeting. I saw Tank throwing us silver packets of food. I heard Critter laughing, saw his beard filled with crumbs. I felt Rose’s body curled up next to mine.

My Rose.

I lifted my head and howled.

The beast began to grumble and shake. I growled. As we began moving, the metal box jostled and jolted me back and forth, just long enough for me to puke my Mission meal all over it.

I retched again.

And again.

When the beast finally stopped moving, I huddled in my own mess. I didn’t care. I didn’t move when the beast’s mouth opened or when the loop circled back over my neck to pull me out. I didn’t object when they dragged me through my mess and into a metal cage. I didn’t react when they hosed me down. I wouldn’t look at the ‘mans and didn’t care what they were doing with me. When they were done, I crawled into a corner, curled into a ball, and closed my eyes.

Like Critter, I was done with ‘mans.
