âI wish Linc had accepted your offer to come over for dessert after weâre through at my parentsâ,â Emerson said from the passenger seat as they drove the fifteen miles to her parentsâ house.
âMe too. I hate the thought of him spending the holiday alone. Iâm worried about him.â He made a right and quickly flipped the visor down when the setting sun nearly blinded him.
Emerson solved the same dilemma by turning toward him in her seat. âItâs only been a few weeks since the funeral. Give him time.â
He glanced at her when he came to a red light. âI keep telling myself that, but heâs like a completely different person.â
âNot only did he recently lose his sister but heâs also now responsible for a four-year-old little girl. Thatâs a lot of weight on his shoulders. Iâd be surprised if he wasnât acting differently.â
Oz knew she was right, but that didnât make it any easier to see his friend struggling.
âMake a right at the next corner.â He followed her direction, slowing when she pointed. âItâs the gray house, there, on the left.
Oz passed the house, used a driveway to make a U-turn, then parked at the curb. He put the SUV in park but didnât make a move to take off his seatbelt.
Noticing, Emerson said, âIâm not bringing a plate of food out to you.â Her smirk told him she was teasing.
âI didnât know that was an option.â
âItâs not.â She pushed the button and his seatbelt disengaged.
âBefore we go in, can we go over it one more time.â
âSure.â She got comfortable in her seat, her sweater dress hiking up her thighs, leaving a bigger gap of creamy skin between the tops of her knee-high leather boots and the hem of the soft wool knit.
It was distracting as hell. He shifted his eyes to the dash to better concentrate. âOkay, your father, Mike, is the site manager at Global Steel Mill and spends his weekends fishing.â
âAnd hiking.â
Oz nodded, committing that to memory. âYour mom, Jill, is a high school English teacher who does pottery when your dad is fishing.â
âDonât forget Chewy and Sulley.â
âRight, your momâs Pomeranians who I shouldnât be surprised if they sit at the dinner table.â
She pointed a finger. âNot if, when.â
Oz had a hard time picturing that but didnât comment. âThen thereâs your brother, Will, whoâs into comic books, and is an IT guy for Sinclair Health Centers.â
âYes, and probably the only person in the house who will understand you if you talk about football.â
He made a mental noteâno football talk. âAnd last, your sister, Mia, whoâs the oldest and married toâ¦â Oz snapped his fingers.
âGarrett. And they donât have children, which is why Mom has Pomeranians."
"Workaholics. I remember. Both in real estate.â
âYes, thatâs how they met.â
âOkay, I think Iâm ready.â He got out of the car and went around to Emersonâs side, opening the door.
She took his hand and climbed out. âYouâll see. Once you meet them, youâll wonder what the heck you were so worried about.â
Nice sentiment, but doubtful.
