Chapter Nine

THE DELIVERYMAN was surprised but unfazed when Spider-Man answered the door; he’d been making deliveries in New York for thirty years. Spidey signed for the envelope, said thanks, and shut the door.

Dai set the envelope on the counter and peeled off his head covering. He’d just walked in the door when the deliveryman knocked. Quickly, he changed into a T-shirt and track pants and got a bottle of sparkling water out of the fridge. After he took several long swallows, he set the bottle down and picked up the envelope.

Another photograph taken in the same location as the last one. Dai recognized the stone wall and the shallow granite bowl. The bowl was filled with seed, and a sparrow perched on the rim. The poem was printed in the shadow of the bowl. I cannot touch you. You’re no longer in my world. Still I reach for you.

Once again, Dai felt the twinge of doubt. How could the man who wrote these poems be the same man who betrayed his trust? Maybe he should call Will. No. Dai ruthlessly squashed that thought. There was nothing Will could say to excuse what he’d done. No. It was better to not entertain thoughts of giving Will a second chance. Even if the poems made Dai melt inside.

After dropping the photo on the counter, Dai went back to the fridge to forage. Five hours of leaping about had left him with an appetite. He found a takeout box from Hadaka and gleefully ate Harlow’s leftovers. He was just finishing when Harlow showed up.

“Is that my food?” Harlow asked.

“You can have it back.” Dai opened his mouth wide.

“You’re lucky I don’t come over there and fill that hole.”

“I don’t know. I’m pretty horny.”

“So fuck somebody. It’s not like they wouldn’t come running if you winked at them.”

“Who are they?”

“Every top in the city.”

“Where do they hang out?”

“Not at Toys“R”Us.”

“Yeah, I knew that.”

“Seriously, man, you need to shake this off.”

“Am I still moping?”

“You’ve never been this negative.”

“Sorry. I’m starting to hate my job already.”

“So find something else. Meanwhile, quit the job that makes you unhappy.”

“My savings won’t last forever. More like a couple of months.”

“Don’t worry about the rent.” Harlow touched the back of Dai’s hand. “With my savings and earnings from the dance company, my bank account is solid. But if you want a job, I have an idea. Let me make a call.” He took out his phone and walked out the back. When he returned, he was grinning. “Congratulations! You’re a model.”

“I am?”

“Well, you don’t mind being naked, right?”

“You know I don’t.”

“Perfect. This photographer I know needs beautiful people to take pictures of. You can go with me tomorrow morning.”

“I’m supposed to go to work.”

“You are going to work… with me. Call in drunk to the toy store. That should get you fired.”

“I don’t want to get fired, but I can get one of the other guys to cover for me.”

“Awesome. This is going to be out of control.”

“I could use some fun.
