BRIDGETTE

Dana stayed away from the dating scene and, unfortunately, her friends for the following month. She claimed to be busy at work, allowing her ample time for self-care. She believed the consequences of ignoring her internal moral compass bit her in the ass. In the end, the two girls she jumped into bed with confronted her, and all that did was make Dana feel worse about herself. When she finally finished her self-loathing, she opened the dating app and gave it a look, only to swipe left to get rid of almost every profile the app suggested.

Once and for all, she deleted the program from her phone and tossed it aside. She found it oddly comforting to go out, although she had spent the previous few months on many unsatisfactory dates. She at least could claim to be part of the dating scene. Dana grew increasingly lonely as Mr. Jinx kneaded the blanket and purred next to her. As she listened to his quiet hum, a tear welled up in her eye. She wished Bridgette were sitting next to her, grumbling about something trivial.

Dana cast her gaze over to the opposite side of the couch. Bridgette’s spot. When she moved out, she took the sofa with her, and it carried a lot of memories with it. After they got divorced, Bridgette gave Dana first dibs on whatever she wanted to keep from their shared belongings. As the couple vacated their city penthouse, Bridgette took possession of all the unwanted items. Dana huffed a sigh of loneliness seeing the empty seat once occupied by her former wife. She went to bed, completely devoid of all feeling, even an ounce of happiness.

The following morning, Dana pulled into the parking lot of the all-too-familiar office building rather than going to the flower shop. A replay of the fight that ultimately led to the end of her marriage played in her head as she gazed upward to the tenth floor. She blinked her eyes several times, willing herself to gather the energy necessary to return to Bridgette’s workplace.

Given that it was also once her office, she had a poor chance of avoiding recognizable faces. She let out a gasp before stepping out of the vehicle and making her way to the infamous tenth floor.

The company sign welcomed her as the elevator doors opened, but there was no one at the front desk. It was good to see that some things remained unchanged. To save their lives, the company never retained a receptionist longer than a week. Dana pushed open the double glass doors and hurried toward the offices. Faces and heads turned in her direction as soon as the doors opened, but no one intervened to stop her. They never stop people who walked purposefully into the office. People frequently stopped and questioned those who dallied.

Through the clear glass office walls, Dana noticed no one else in Bridgette’s office with her. Bridgette had already noticed her when she knocked on the glass wall. Bridgette’s expression of shock as Dana opened the door was priceless.
