Audrey had quickly fallen into a comfortable role at the bookstore and found herself thriving as the day went on. As much as she loved her niece, she enjoyed not being tied down with a baby. Throughout the day, though, moments of guilt washed over her and made her feel like the crummiest aunt ever. She forced herself to remember that she was not only working for her own well-being and independence, but for Daniellaâs as well. Along with the guilt that popped up sporadically, she also had a few longing moments where her mind drifted off to Jamie and wondered what the cute butch was up to. It had been a week since Jamieâs impromptu sleepover, and since then, they hadnât shared another meal or another intimate conversation other than sweet text messages and phone calls. Jamie had sounded healthy and relatively happy during their small, cherished times together over their phones, but Audrey could sense that Jamie wasnât telling her something, and that bothered her. Even if romance wasnât in the cards for them, a friendship definitely was as they had grown closer in the last month, so Audrey assumed Jamie would want to tell her everything about what was going on in her life. She figured she was going to have to coax it out of her.
âI canât cook for her, not after what sheâs made.â Audrey was in the romance section of the store, stocking paperbacks on the shelves. âI can just ask her whatâs going on.â She sighed then froze when she spotted a pile of new books that had arrivedâlesbian fiction romance. She picked up one of the paperbacks and stared at the cover showing two women in the throes of passion. Seduce her? Does Jamie see me in that way? Of course, she does. How many times have you caught her looking down your top or at your legs? Too many to count. âProbably thought she was being sly,â Audrey muttered to herself then giggled.
Once her very first shift was done, she picked up Daniella at Amyâs then headed for the grocery store. After placing the shopping cart cover in the seat of the cart, Audrey settled Daniella in the seat then handed her a teething ring to chew on. âPoor baby girl.â She stroked her hair, noting the rosy cheeks, a side effect from teething. Audreyâs full attention was on Daniella as she pushed the cart to the front doors that she hadnât noticed the cart emerging from inside about to collide with hers.
âWatch out!â
Audrey sharply looked up just in time to see Jamie expertly maneuvering her cart around Audreyâs. âOh, Jamie, Iâm so sorry, I wasnât watching.â
Jamie dramatically placed a hand over her heart as she took deep breaths.
Audrey fell deeply concerned, stepped closer to Jamie, and placed a hand on her shoulder. âIâm so sorry! I didnât mean to get your heart started.â
Jamie chuckled. âIâm just teasing you. Iâm actually okay.â
Audrey didnât know how to respond to Jamieâs teasing, so she looked down at her low-heeled shoes and cleared her throat.
