Chapter 13

Beams of sunlight streamed through the blinds, and Melia smiled as she felt them warm her skin as she stretched widely upon waking up until she hopped out of the bed and pulled her mussed blonde hair in something that was like a mix between a bun and a ponytail.

Chipper, she trotted to the kitchen and a broad smile spread on her face when she saw Lois gathering her stuff as she was about to go to work. “Hi,” she beamed brightly.

“Hello to you too,” Lois smiled and Melia’s heart flip-flopped. “Are you ready for your party tonight?”

“I trust that you’re not about to throw me a huge party with flashy lights and too many people, so yes.” Melia nodded, smiling.

“Don’t worry about that, I know you.” Lois said. “I actually rented a beach house that’s set ten minutes from here on foot and although the number of attendants isn’t exactly small, I promise you, it’s only people you’re gonna want to see.”

“I wish my family could have been part of this too, but I know they have too much work to do and can’t take time apart from the ranch on such a short notice.” Melia sighed slightly.

“They support you anyway, I’m sure of this.” Lois smiled and then she cleared her throat. “So, I’ve gotta head to work. Is that okay if I come pick you up at 7 o’clock and we’ll go to the party from here?”

“That feels like a date,” Melia blurted out, letting out a chuckle until her chuckling shut down in her throat that closed up and she swallowed thickly when she realized what she said and noticed Lois’ embarrassed expression. A blush flared up on her skin and she cleared her throat. “I, um… I didn’t mean like, I mean I know you’re too old for me.” Oh, gosh, way to dig yourself in a hole, Melly, she inwardly berated herself. “I mean, more accurately, that’s not that you’re too old for me, but more like, I am too young for you.” Not very much better. “I mean, uh… you know what I mean.” For fuck’s sake, shut the hell up! She startled when she cursed, although it hadn’t been out loud. But still, in was rare for Melia to curse, even just in her mind. A frown went to her face when she noticed Lois’ expression that didn’t look embarrassed anymore but was overtaken with something that Melia couldn’t quite decipher. Was it hurt? She wondered with surprise when she remarked that Lois’ eyes seemed filled with unshed tears as her throat bobbed up and down when she swallowed before she cleared her throat as she ducked her head.

“I need to go to work. See you tonight.” Lois’ voice was slightly wavering as she spoke without taking a breath while she quickly walked past Melia with her face down.

Melia watched Lois walk away and stayed puzzled, rooted on her spot until she slightly jumped in surprise when she heard the front door slam louder than she expected.
