The black people there did not take an interest in tales of time travel, of waking up in the 24th century in a planet on which giant worms bored tunnels for the telepathic humans who never aged. Still, Patricia had kept up her reading, and at 25 she still loved The Midnight Folk by John Masefield. She had persuaded Shane to read it, and he had liked it so much that he had bought copies for Cheryl and for Mary’s sons.
