DECEASED WOMAN EXPOSED IN SWAN

The body of Catherine Phillips Mason was found unearthed in the family plot at Magnolia Cemetery on July 8. The grave of another family member, James J. (Big Jim) Mason, was defaced with black paint. Officials are investigating motives for this bizarre crime. Sheriff Ralph Hunnicutt of Swan stated that grave robbery was the likely motive. The body was discovered at 9:00 A.M. by the victim’s sister-in-law, Miss Lillian Elizabeth Mason, who was visiting the family plot, and Mrs. Eleanor Whitefield, former mathematics teacher at Swan High, when she visited the grave of her husband, the late Holt Whitefield. Cass Deal, cemetery caretaker, stated that he had seen no unusual activity. Mrs. Mason died in 1956 by her own hand. Formerly of Vidalia, she was married to Dr. Wills Mason, whose ancestors were early settlers of Swan. She is survived by Dr. Mason, who resides at the Columns Rest Home, and by two grown children.
