Chapter 4

Galaxy blinked his eyes open, but wherever he was, whatever he was seeing was so blurry he closed his eyes again, groaning.

“You awake?” Leo’s voice reached him. “Hold on.”

He felt his glasses being slipped behind his ears and on his nose. Galaxy’s eyes fluttering rapidly, Leo’s pale face hovering over him shifted into focus. Leo frowned, his dark eyes watery.

“Hey,” Galaxy said, reaching up to gently touch his brother’s cheek. “You okay?”

Leo choked. “Me? You’re the one I found unconscious at the foot of the bed. Should-should I call the paramedics?”

He realized he was on his bed in his room. He vaguely remembered deciding to lie down because of his head. It seemed to be better now. Just a dull ache.

“No, I’m okay. It was just a harder first day at the diner than I expected.”

His brother’s dark eyes turned even more watery. “Maybe you should quit if it’s that bad.”

He smiled and slowly sat up, relieved when the intense pain didn’t return. “Really, I’m all right, Leo. Just had a headache.”

“You’ve been getting too many lately. You’re taking all your medicine? Your eye drops?”

“Yes. You’re fretting too much, kid. I’m fine.” He smiled to reassure his brother.

Leo hugged him. “You’re all I have.”

“Ah, Leo.” He wrapped his arms tight around his brother. “I’m not going anywhere. I promise. You’ll always have me.”

Leo nodded but didn’t say anything.

“Where were you when I first got home?” he asked.

“I went to the grocery store. I thought you’d like dinner after working all day.”

Galaxy’s eyes filled with tears and he tightened his hold. “Thanks, kiddo. That would be awesome.”

His brother pulled away. He nodded. “Come out and talk to me while I make it. I can make you some tea, too.”

He should be taking care of Leo, not the other way around, but he still felt too weak from his collapse to argue, so he got out of bed and followed his little brother out to the kitchen.

“Sit there,” Leo said, pointing at a dining room chair. “I’ll make the tea.”

“Leo—”

“Just do as you’re told for once, Galaxy.” Leo went into the kitchen and filled up the electronic tea kettle.

Galaxy took the seat. “I’m not an invalid. I don’t need to be waited on.”

His brother nodded. “I know, but I just found you unconscious. Shall I call for an ambulance after all?”

He sighed. “All right. I’m sorry. I get your point.”

“Thank you. How was your day really? Are you sure it’s not too much?”

“It was pretty busy. More customers came than I expected I guess, but it’s not something I can’t handle. Just out of practice is all.”

Leo poured the boiling water into a personal sized teapot he had filled with loose tea. “Well, just be careful, please? I know you don’t think so, but you have been having more headaches. Maybe you should make a doctor’s appointment.”

He nodded. “I will. Hey, but listen to this. I have a date.” It felt good to change the subject.

“A date? With who?”

“Adam Colfer, the guy who owns the diner.
