Chapter 13: Trade

“Grab my hand! Jefferson listen. I need you to grab my hand!” Micco was yelling down at him. The world seemed to be as if he was on boat in the middle of a storm. There was a couple more ridges sticking out from the dirt he could grab but the problem was reaching them. They weren’t out of his reach but he was scared that if he went to reach for them he wouldn’t have the strength to hang on as well. The longer he hung on the weaker he was getting it. Micco was screaming down at him to grab his hand when he could see one of Jefferson’s fingers beginning to slip. It was dark and his hand was hard to see but Micco was hanging over the edge with Jasmine and Sam grabbing his legs.

“Drop me lower.” Micco yelled up at them.

“We can’t. We’ll drop you!” Sam screamed back down to him. She was looking around for something to help. She was gazing over the edge for anyway to help when she saw her opportunity. She needed to take it sooner than later because Jefferson looked as if he was going to fall.

Micco was only another hand away from grabbing Jefferson’s. He could see how shaky his hands were becoming. They weren’t hanging there but the angle of the hill and reliability of hand placement made it almost a water slide to the center of the earth. In the next moment Micco was able to grab Jefferson’s hand. Jefferson able to realize this reacted and let go of the ledge he was hanging onto and grabbed Micco’s hand. The misfortunate move made here was Micco didn’t have enough time to react about the fact that the only reason he was able to reach Jefferson in the first place was because Sam had let go of one leg and the only one holding on was Jasmine. When the weight of Jefferson pulled the three of them nearly over the edge, Micco had no choice but to let get of Jefferson.

Jasmine dropped to her side and slid to the edge before Micco let go and almost brought them down after him. Micco just watched as Jefferson’s eyes desperately searched for a way out as he started sliding down to his death. There was nothing Micco could do in this time as he was watching Jefferson descend on his mere two or three second slide in to the pit.

It was almost as if Sam had grown wings and had become an angel. As Jefferson slid down and ejected himself off the edge Sam came off a higher edge above them. She was hanging on to a broken streetlight that was hanging down and bent the other way. While she had let go of Micco’s leg she ran up and kicked it to see if it was sturdy. It dropped and swung down like a rope over the edge. It was caught on some rocks that if were moved would become a perfect swing.
