Katherine Riley counted a dozen surfers besides herself, everyone in black wetsuits, sitting on their boards… waiting. Eleven bored surfers… two women - the rest men. One paddled in and then there were ten.

“Yo, B.G., where you going, dude?”

Brian Gilbert turned to face the six-foot six-inch copper-red head. “Sorry, Kat. Getting’ cold.”

“Getting old?”

He motioned to the four teens paddling out to join them. “Yeah, that too. Maybe I’ll come back after curfew.”

Kat waved. The WNBA power forward had been surfing long before she had ever picked up a basketball. Every off-season she returned to find solitude in riding the waves, only the beaches of her youth had been overrun by teens.

Raj Sorenson paddled over to her. Born in India, the Defense Department computer programmer surfed to decompress from sixty-hour work weeks. Still, the techie prided himself on knowing precisely when the next set of waves would arrive.

“Three minutes, forty-two seconds. Once the first one breaks, they’ll arrive every 32 seconds. Tide’s in. This set will be much bigger and more powerful than the last.”

“Fifty bucks says you’re wrong.” Like Kat, Michael Bryant was a large human being growing larger, the former outside linebacker at UCLA having put on thirty pounds since his playing days.

“Michael, you still owe me seventy dollars from Thursday.”

“Fine, we’ll go double or nothing.”

“You cannot keep saying double or nothing every time you lose. Otherwise—”

Raj paused as the “Larbey-Four” paddled by, the siblings – ages sixteen to twenty – positioning themselves ahead of Kat’s group at the break point.
