As they pushed through the over-sized doors, blackness greeted them. Cynthia loved the lack of lighting because it allowed her to see the stars that she was unable to see in New York City, but the darkness wasnât their friend tonight.
The power had gone out long ago, and everything ran off a generator now. To conserve energy, they didnât power any of the outside lights.
âI can barely see my hand in front of my face,â Skylar said.
âSoundâs our best weapon.â Cynthia began shouting Anneâs name.
They methodically spread out, taking turns calling out to Anne. After ten minutes, they were nearly fifty yards from the mansion when a faint sound came from the darkness.
âOver here,â Dillon said. âI think sheâs off to my left.â
âKeep talking,â Skylar shouted. âWeâll try to follow your voice.â
Dillon rambled about nothing until the two stood beside her. Cynthia called Anneâs name again, and they followed her answering call.
âI think itâs coming from the path going to the hotel,â Dillon said.
Once they arrived at the path, with a reference point under their feet, they were able to pick up the pace. Periodically, they called Anneâs name until her voice came from nearby.
Dillon had been leading the trio, so when she stopped abruptly, it created a chain reaction. Skylar plowed into Dillonâs back, followed by Cynthia, who ran into Skylar.
âSorry,â Dillon mumbled. âI wanted to get my bearings.â
âWarn us next time, will you?â Cynthia said.
Dillon screamed.
âOkay, never mind,â Cynthia said.
Dillon and Anne burst out laughing.
âI wasnât screaming at you. Anne just grabbed me and scared the shit out of me.â
âAnne?â Cynthia said. âI canât see you.â
A blinding light cut through the darkness, causing all three to turn their heads and squint. Anne held up one of the high-tech lanterns theyâd found in the museum.
âWhy didnât you turn it on earlier? It would have made it much easier to find you.â Cynthia blinked her eyes several times, trying to vanquish the spots dancing in her vision.
âSure, but whereâs the fun in that?â
Cynthia gazed at her for the first time. She looked awful. Pale and with red puffy eyes. Despite trying to appear casual, sheâd obviously been crying. âWhatâs going on, Anne?â
The light turned off and darkness enveloped them.
âNice try, but we already saw,â Cynthia said. âDo you think you could turn that back on?â
Anne took two deep inhalations before light filled the night again. âThereâs not much to tell.â
âWhat happened?â Cynthia asked. Tiffany, obviously. What had she done this time?
âTiffany being Tiffany,â Anne said elusively.
âWould you like us to leave the two of you alone to talk?â Skylar offered.
âNo, Iâm sure everyone will find out soon enough, but thank you.â
When Cynthia saw the tears streaming down Anneâs face, she instinctively went to her. Sheâd comforted Anne more times than she could count over the years, whenever Tiffany did something thoughtless, which was often. She put her arm around Anneâs shoulders.
âWhy did I think this time would be any different in the middle of a crisis? God, Iâm a fool.â No one spoke as they waited for Anne to continue.
