Chapter Five

“Why the fuck am I still considering this?” Evan mumbled.

Nigel’s advice had been to extract himself from this mess before it turned worse. Evan ignored his best friend’s wisdom until it was too late.

“The solution’s clear, isn’t it?” Evan whispered to the empty room.

While not a superstitious person, he sometimes wondered if Trevor’s ghost lingered in the walls of this house.

What would Trevor think, if he were alive?

“But he’s dead,” Evan muttered.

What good was the dead to the living? Did Trevor know what would happen to Glenn? Wait, he shouldn’t be blaming the victim.

Evan flopped unceremoniously on the bed, ignoring the creaking metal frame. Worrying incessantly wasn’t healthy for the baby. Doing the right thing meant leaving Glenn on his own though.

Would the Alpha be finally able to stand on his own two feet?

Would Evan, after he’d gotten so used to domestic bliss?

The crash from Glenn’s room made him tense up. It was followed by a frustrated growl. Once or twice, a neighbor called the cops, but Evan always managed to soothe the situation out. Another bang sounded, making him wince. Evan expected more furniture crashes. Glenn usually took out his frustration on wood and plastic until there was nothing else left to wreck.

The next morning, Evan would take a look at his room, see the mess and chalk it up as damage. They’d had to make a quick stop at the nearest Ikea again. Buy the cheapest stuff. Maybe there was a new cabinet on sale, one that didn’t have glass.

Glass made a mess and Evan was tired of bandaging the Alpha’s fists. Mostly because Glenn had enough of those scars on his knuckles. Alphas healed fast enough, so that meant Glenn had been doing this far too many times.

Guilt rammed into Evan a second later. Glenn didn’t deserve that, but Evan was always there to clean up the mess. Nothing from Glenn’s room after that, so Evan pressed his ear to the wall, heart thumping.

A strange noise came from the other side. Choking sobs. It took Evan a second to realize Glenn was crying. Every muscle in his body froze. The big strong Alpha never shed tears, even at Trevor’s funeral.

All this time...had Glenn been holding his grief in, never letting show?

Often, Evan would need a couple of minutes to stand up. However for once, he rose without effort—okay, not that much. His feet touched the soft carpeting. Evan padded out of the room. This was probably another bad idea after he ran out during dinner, but he couldn’t exactly leave Glenn alone.

Evan turned the knob of his bedroom. The hinges creaked. No reaction. Glenn must be really distracted, too deep into his grief, thinking no one else could see him. Evan hesitated by Glenn’s door. The awful sounds came again. Glenn wasn’t loud. The Alpha probably thought that real men didn’t cry or some bullshit like that.

Evan thought the Alpha deserved a break.

At first, he assumed Glenn locked the room. He even debated finding some kind of weapon to break the door down.
