Chapter Eight

"Look, if it's about Kayla. You have to understand where I'm coming from. Actually, you don't have to understand anything. This has nothing to do with you." Ted shakes his head as he turns his back on her.

Sheila walks toward him, walking beside him when he goes around the side of the house.

"This does concern me. You do know that there's nothing that you can do about Kayla and me being together if that's what she wants. You can't sit there and tell her that she's not going to get her kid back because I'm there. That's not okay, and you know it. No judge is going to sit there and take your side over this," Sheila tells him.

“I don’t need Kayla and Alex getting hurt.” Ted shakes his head.

"You don't want them to get hurt, but you're the one that's going to hurt them in the end. Alex is going to cry when he's not home tomorrow night, like his normal routine. He's going to be upset that he doesn't see his mother, that he doesn't see me." Sheila tells him, stopping him in his tracks.

“You think that this is easy for me?” Ted asks her, looking into her eyes this time.

"It should be if you want Kayla to be happy. If you want your son to be happy, then you won't do this. You're going about the past and how Kayla hurt you. Now, you want to do the same thing to her. That's not fair," Sheila whispers to him.

Her heart aches for Alex, who has no idea what's going on. Her heart aches for Kayla, who doesn't even know she's there.

“Do you know what she did after she got off the phone with you?” Sheila asks him.

"No, I can't say that I do," he mutters, going to the back porch and sitting in one of the chairs looking out over the woods that leads to a pond.

They can see it quite clearly with the leaves falling off the trees.

"She was crying. I was going to leave to make it easier on her. Not for me. It wouldn't be easy on me saying goodbye to Alex. Saying goodbye to her. I want her to be happy too, and if that means that I have to leave, then you just tell me right now. I want her to have her son." Sheila points out to him, looking at him as his eyes continue to stare off into the woods.

"I can see that Alex likes you. I didn't know that he liked you that much until he ran up to you. I'm just upset is all," Ted grunts, nodding his head.

“About what? You’re the one who left her. She didn’t leave you. She might have messed up, but that was on you to leave instead of working things out with her.” Sheila reminds him.

Ted winces in pain but doesn't say anything about it.

"What are you so upset about?" Sheila asks him again.

"The fact that she would have the nerve to do that to me.
