Chapter Fourteen

Mason

“Want to have dinner with my parents when the snow clears?” Brandon asks as he makes dinner a few nights after his heat ends. Neither of us mentions him leaving—even though it’s impossible with so much snow and ice still on the ground—and I don’t want him to. It’ll be a little strange to ask Brandon to move in after only a week, but the sooner he’s here permanently, the better.

I thought having a fated mate would be weird. From all the stories I’ve heard—what I thought were fairytales—I thought the couple was sappy, obsessed with each other, so hopelessly and foolishly in love that they can’t see anything in their face, living in their own lovestruck world. That’s not what it is at all. Even though it’s been a week, my world revolves around Brandon. I’m willing to do anything for him, making sure he’s as happy as I can make him. But we’re independent people. I can function without him—though I’d never want to. I don’t feel like I have to please Brandon, I want to.

I want to touch him and kiss him and cuddle with him all day, but I know that’s not possible—or healthy.

Coming back to the present, I grin at him. “Yeah, sure. I’d love to meet them.”

He stirs the pot of stew he's making, glancing over his shoulder at me. “I talked to Father last night and he’s almost jumping through the phone to grill you.”

“Should I be afraid?” I’m joking, but I also want to know what I’m getting myself into.

Brandon turns the burner down and walks over to sit on my lap. After giving me a long, slow kiss, he pulls away and rubs a thumb over my cheek. “You have nothing to be worried about. Dad is great. He only wants me to be happy. He’s said that plenty of times. Father is … well, he’s a little more overbearing. But only because he wants the best for me. As my fated mate, you have nothing to be worried about. He knows how it is to be fated with a strong alpha. He knows you won’t hurt me, just as he knows Dad won’t hurt him. You have no reason to be afraid, my alpha.”

My heart almost explodes with love I probably shouldn’t feel so fast, but damned if it isn’t there. “Can I ask you something?” I need to know we’re on the same page here. That he feels at least a margin of what I feel. We don’t have to make a show of it, saying it every day or every few minutes—something I want to do, if I’m being honest—but I’ll at least know I’m not crazy or the mates thing isn’t messing with my head.

“Anything, Mason.”

If Brandon’s face weren’t so earnest, so curious and open, I would have backpedaled and said forget it. But he looks at me with a question in his brown eyes and I can’t let it go. Even if it doesn’t go my way, I have to know.
