Iâm trying not to think of Mack at all as I make my way back through Mulberry Park for the third time today so far. Itâs a beautiful morning again today but thereâs less humidity so itâs cooler and fresher than the last two days. Itâs Sunday, and although itâs almost 11.3o and the weather is perfect, there are only a few families in the park. The beach was starting to fill when I left Seascape Café earlier, so I suppose most of them will be on the beach. Ducks are swimming on the lake but even they seem quiet right now. When I ran through here on my way to Emmaâs, I gave them a nasty scare and they flapped their wings and made a general fuss, as ducks do when they feel threatened.
Itâs no good. I canât pretend to be paying any real attention to my surroundings when all I want to think about is Mack.
Why had he sounded so worried when we spoke? Was it because heâd been found out? Or was it because his boss had some hold over him and Mack felt threatened?
Now Iâm letting my imagination run riot. Or maybe Iâm trying to make excuses for his behaviour. The sooner I get to hear what he has to say the better Iâll feel.
Or not.
I suppose it depends on what he says.
I quicken my pace.
Why does this always happen to me? Why do I always pick the wrong guy?
âListen to what he says,â Katie advised as I was leaving Emmaâs. âDonât jump to conclusions. Iâll go and get my phone so call me if you need me. Weâre all here for you, Tori. And Iâm going to keep my fingers crossed.â
At least I picked the right best friend.
Pizza Pie is busier than I expected but I spot Mack at a table in one corner. Iâm not sure if he chose it because itâs fairly secluded, or if the waitress sat him there.
He smiles at me as I approach but itâs not the happy smile from yesterday. Itâs even more awkward today and he reaches out his hand and quickly pulls it back, as if he assumes itâll be rejected.
âYou look lovely,â he says.
âThanks.â
âI ordered you a cappuccino. I hope thatâs okay.â
âWhatever.â
âAre you going to sit down?â
âIs this going to take long?â
A small sigh escapes him. âI know youâre upset, but is there any need to make this so difficult?â His voice is tinged with regret.
âWas there any need for you to lie to me?â
âI didnât lie to you!â He looks as surprised as he sounds.
I accept Iâm being hostile so I sit.
âYou didnât tell me the truth. Why couldnât you have simply told me that your company is interested in buying Seascape Café? Was there any need for secrecy?â
âYes!â
He says it so emphatically that Iâm taken by surprise.
âOh. Erm. Why?â
âI donât know how deals are done in the music business, but in my world, if youâre interested in purchasing a property, and you know your
