I’m trying not to think of Mack at all as I make my way back through Mulberry Park for the third time today so far. It’s a beautiful morning again today but there’s less humidity so it’s cooler and fresher than the last two days. It’s Sunday, and although it’s almost 11.3o and the weather is perfect, there are only a few families in the park. The beach was starting to fill when I left Seascape Café earlier, so I suppose most of them will be on the beach. Ducks are swimming on the lake but even they seem quiet right now. When I ran through here on my way to Emma’s, I gave them a nasty scare and they flapped their wings and made a general fuss, as ducks do when they feel threatened.

It’s no good. I can’t pretend to be paying any real attention to my surroundings when all I want to think about is Mack.

Why had he sounded so worried when we spoke? Was it because he’d been found out? Or was it because his boss had some hold over him and Mack felt threatened?

Now I’m letting my imagination run riot. Or maybe I’m trying to make excuses for his behaviour. The sooner I get to hear what he has to say the better I’ll feel.

Or not.

I suppose it depends on what he says.

I quicken my pace.

Why does this always happen to me? Why do I always pick the wrong guy?

‘Listen to what he says,’ Katie advised as I was leaving Emma’s. ‘Don’t jump to conclusions. I’ll go and get my phone so call me if you need me. We’re all here for you, Tori. And I’m going to keep my fingers crossed.’

At least I picked the right best friend.

Pizza Pie is busier than I expected but I spot Mack at a table in one corner. I’m not sure if he chose it because it’s fairly secluded, or if the waitress sat him there.

He smiles at me as I approach but it’s not the happy smile from yesterday. It’s even more awkward today and he reaches out his hand and quickly pulls it back, as if he assumes it’ll be rejected.

‘You look lovely,’ he says.

‘Thanks.’

‘I ordered you a cappuccino. I hope that’s okay.’

‘Whatever.’

‘Are you going to sit down?’

‘Is this going to take long?’

A small sigh escapes him. ‘I know you’re upset, but is there any need to make this so difficult?’ His voice is tinged with regret.

‘Was there any need for you to lie to me?’

‘I didn’t lie to you!’ He looks as surprised as he sounds.

I accept I’m being hostile so I sit.

‘You didn’t tell me the truth. Why couldn’t you have simply told me that your company is interested in buying Seascape Café? Was there any need for secrecy?’

‘Yes!’

He says it so emphatically that I’m taken by surprise.

‘Oh. Erm. Why?’

‘I don’t know how deals are done in the music business, but in my world, if you’re interested in purchasing a property, and you know your
