Comanche Braves

has been uneventful and somewhat dull all the men knew from experience that this could change as quickly as a change in the direction of the wind.

Further on down the trail, that night the Comanche braves stayed busy digging foxholes near the trail to Fort Merrill to hide in when the Texas Rangers patrol rides by with Carne Muerto. They intended to recapture him and kill With Dead Eyes and his devil horse. The leader of the small raiding party was the one who had attempted to steal the crazy Mustang the night before. The wild Mustang threw him as soon as he mounted him, and he fell on his head, twisting his neck violently.

Now his head would twitch to his left side involuntarily, although the Comanche Brave seemed to be unaware of what was happening.

The other braves noticed it and were alarmed, but as Two Arrows did not seem to notice his head was jerking around this way and that, they thought it best not to say anything. Two Arrows was an aggressive and angry man on most days, so it is best not to alarm or anger him.

“Make sure you make the holes deep. When we hide we want to be covered by wicker trap doors, tumbleweed and dirt so the two Tonkawa scouts will not detect us as they ride by,” Two Arrows said.

The seven of them dug six holes. The seventh man was to complete camouflaging the Braves in their burrows in the ground. When ‘With Dead Eyes’ passes by with Carne Muerto they intended to jump out of their holes and knock the two White Hats off their horses on either side of him and ride off with their prisoner after killing the Rangers.

It would be big medicine if they could capture With Dead Eyes alive too. When the first shot is heard, the seventh Indian Brave will come with another six Warrior Braves and extra Indian ponies. Then they would make their escape and if they can kill a few more white hats with the ambush, all the better.

“We will hide early tomorrow morning just before daylight,” Two Arrows said to Deaf Ears.

“What did you say Two Arrows?” Deaf Ears asked.

“Be here tomorrow morning before daylight. Come on foot so as to make no tracks. You will camouflage our hiding positions and then go back to the horses,” Two Arrows yelled.

Deaf Ears nodded his head that he understood as he watched Two Arrow’s head jerk this way and that. He thought to himself, that can’t be normal. His head is jerking faster as each hour passes, but also being afraid of this angry Comanche he said nothing. Early that morning the Comanche were all in their holes, and Deaf Ears was covering each of them with sagebrush, tumbleweed, and dirt. He felt very proud to have camouflaged them so well. He then started running back to the horses, and the other braves hid in the gully, to tell them to get ready for Two Arrow’s signal.
