Chapter Nine

EMPIRE. AN IMPOSING name for a settlement of frame buildings, store and saloon and stable, and a scattering of dwellings, large and small. According to Duran it was the only town within miles. Therefore, Sundance was faintly surprised to see only two horses in front of the saloon, none before the store. And he saw no one on the dirt walks. A hundred yards on all sides of Empire was the green hell of the brasada.

A Mexican rider leading a burrow loaded with firewood was just coming out of the brush at the edge of town. He looked startled when Sundance suddenly appeared. Today Sundance wore his buckskin shirt, denim pants and sombrero. He wanted nothing to upset Pete Duran’s niece; if he rode up attired as a Cheyenne warrior she might faint dead away. Her late uncle had said she was a sensitive young lady.

It took the Mexican a moment to recover from his surprise at seeing the Cheyenne face crowned with yellow hair. Then he answered Sundance’s terse questions, telling him how to reach the Duran hacienda. Yes, the senorita was there, he finished, but he didn’t know for how long. He jerked on the burro’s lead rope and hurried away, the load of firewood swaying, to part company with the sinister looking stranger.

Sundance could well understand the man’s reluctance to divulge information. He was now a minority in an area that had originally been settled by his ancestors, the Mexicans. Most had been driven out during the Texas struggle for independence.
