Chapter Six
By the time Alby returned to the YMCA, Mr. Caruthers had gone home for the day. Alby sat in the lounge and listened to the conversations, and after a time, a group of men persuaded him to join their card game. But his mind wasnât in it, and he soon lost all his little pieces of paper, much to the good-natured humor of his companions.
As he sat and watched them play, Alby decided that he liked the lounge despite its shabby furniture and smoky stove. The comfortable space reminded him of the ranch bunkhouse. Although the two places didnât look anything alike, they shared a sensibility: men from all over brought together by similar circumstances and enjoying some relaxation. What had that priest said? Even a humble space can be important. Alby reckoned that was true.
He ate a good dinner that night. The man across the table was from Italy and seemed fascinated by Albyâs experiences in Nebraska. He asked a lot of questions. What was it like to live there? How was the weather? Would people welcome an outsider? Were there jobs? Could an honest, hardworking man make a home for himself there? Alby didnât mind the interrogation; it made him feel knowledgeable and wise.
That night some of the fellows whispered to Alby in the lounge, inviting him to join them for a visit to a saloon. âAnd girls,â added a skinny boy barely out of his teens. âWeâre going to look for some girls.â
Alby wished them well but declined. He could still taste Xeno on his lips.
There was a lecture that night in the Yâs large chapel, a professor talking about dinosaur bones heâd dug up. He used a magic lantern and slides to show what he reckoned the creatures had looked like when they were alive, and they were fearsome indeed. Alby was grateful nothing remained of them but bones. He enjoyed the lecture, though, and so did the rest of the audience, many of whom were men and women whoâd come just to hear the professorâs talk.
After the guests left, a minister began to gather the residents for a prayer meeting of some kind, but Alby wasnât interested and went upstairs instead. The beds were neatly made and the stove agreeably warm, and there was no sign of Joe. Alby stripped to his union suit and got into bed.
He intended to go to sleep immediately. But it had been a long time since heâd had such privacy at night, and his body had been electrified from the moment he started kissing Xeno. If he didnât do something about it, he might burst into flames. So he opened a few of the lowest buttons, slid his hand inside, and began to stroke. Not lazily, as he had when heâd stolen some youthful time alone on the ranch, the sun-warmed grass prickling his ass and neck. This was fast. Urgent. He relived the smell of Xenoâs skin and muffled a cry with his free hand as he came.
