A Gentle Push

Arriving at their target location a moment later, Charlie once again squinted into the morning sun. “Where are we now?”

“Germany,” she smiled brightly, “One of my clients has a new baby, and I want you to see it.”

Standing to the side of the path next to her, he could tell they were in some type of park. A short distance away, a couple ambled along, side by side, pushing a large carriage. As they passed, Clarisse grasped his arm, guiding him along next to them so they could observe the infant.

“Aww,” he moaned, “It’s sleeping.”

“Yes, she’s precious. It took many months and a good deal of help for them to conceive,” she admitted with pride.

“I thought you weren’t allowed to use magic on people,” he glared at her.

“Oh, I didn’t,” she grinned sheepishly. “I helped with timing, that’s all.” Opening her Seeker, she offered it to him again, “See this line?”

Charlie stared at the screen and what appeared to be a graph, “Yeah, what does it mean?”

“This is her life-line,” she indicated the woman before them. “See the two grey areas along the edges?”

“Yup, I get those, too,” he nodded.

“You want the life-line to stay between the grey zones. If it crosses into one or the other, something is out of whack,” she touched the screen. “When that happens, you have to make an adjustment, depending on your warning code.”

Watching the flicker, he understood. “So you make changes to her environment.”

“Yes, changes that act as a gentle push, to alter her course.”

“Unless she’s like the beggar,” he recalled his former lesson, and the sad result.

“Yes, sometimes, they refuse to take a different path,” her mood grew somber. “But they must have free will, Charlie. You must never force them; that is the path to darkness, and it will destroy you.”

“I get it,” he placed his hand beneath hers, turning the device so he could see it better. “What does this red flashing mean?”

Seeing the mark at the same time, she gasped, “It means we have trouble. Gous is attacking one of my charges!” Offering her hand, they were off in no time, arriving outside a small house bathed in darkness.

“Where are we?”

“Ohio,” she breathed, “Try to be quiet, in case he or other Dark Angels are about.”

“Oh,” he held back, unsure of what to do. Following her flowing locks, she moved around the outside of the house, watching and listening. Hearing a crash on the opposite side, they dashed around the corner in time to see a pair of legs disappear into the broken frame.

“Quickly!” she grasped his fingers, whisking them to the second floor, where her clients were sound asleep in their bed.

“We must wake them!” she whispered loudly.

Shrugging, Charlie reached over and gave a large vase a shove, causing it to crash to the floor. The man sat straight up, and Charlie quickly deduced that he was naked. Looking over at the woman, he could see the outline of her in the dim light, realizing that she was as well.
