Timeline

July 9, 2007: Sara Karnes is the last person to see Maureen Brainard-Barnes alive, in a hotel room in Manhattan. That night, Maureen places a phone call to her sister, Missy, from Penn Station, the train station that the Long Island Rail Road leaves from.

July 12, 2009: Melissa Barthelemy is last seen in the Bronx. Her boyfriend says she had a high-paying date lined up for that night. Phone records place her in Massapequa, Long Island, that night.

May 1, 2010: A hysterical Shannan Gilbert runs from Joe Brewer’s home in Oak Beach. Her driver, Michael Pak, tries unsuccessfully to find her. Gus Coletti and Barbara Brennan see her frantically banging on doors.

June 5, 2010: Megan Waterman is last seen leaving a Holiday Inn Express in Hauppauge, Long Island. Surveillance footage shows her walking from the hotel toward a convenience store at 1:30 a.m.

September 2, 2010: Amber Lynn Costello is last seen getting into a john’s car in West Babylon, Long Island.

December 11, 2010: Police uncover skeletal remains shrouded in burlap at Gilgo Beach. Six weeks later, they identify these remains as belonging to Melissa Barthelemy.

December 13, 2010: Three more skeletons wrapped in burlap are discovered along Gilgo Beach, all placed at intervals of one-tenth of a mile from each other. These remains belong to Megan Waterman, Amber Lynn Costello, and Maureen Brainard-Barnes.

March 29, 2011: Police discover new remains three-quarters of a mile from where the first four bodies were buried. These remains belong to Jessica Taylor, an escort whose torso had been discovered years earlier farther out along Long Island.

April 4, 2011: Three more sets of remains are discovered. They are never identified, though forensic evidence shows one set belongs to an Asian male, one to an unidentified woman linked to another Jane Doe case, and the third to a female toddler.

April 11, 2011: Two more sets of remains are found. One is identified as the mother of the child found the previous week; the second is linked to an unsolved case from 1996.

December 6, 2011: The police find Shannan’s clothes and personal items in the Oak Beach marsh, near where she was last seen.

December 13, 2011: Police discover Shannan’s body in the marsh.

February 17, 2012: A new set of remains is found in the Pine Barrens of Manorville.

March 21, 2012: Yet another set of remains is found buried in Manorville.
