Chapter Ten
KIERAN
Listening to Rory cry out years of pain shattered my heart into a million pieces. It angered me that his ex-girlfriends had convinced him he wasnât good enough for them. How could anyone be with someone as sweet and caring as him and look elsewhere for another man to satisfy them? It was unfathomable to me and filled me with unreasonable urges to exact revenge on them for daring to hurt him.
Holding him as he worked through his emotional baggage didnât seem like enough. But I wanted to be strong for him so he could set down his burden and move on from his past. Iâd do anything in my power to build him up and make him believe he deserved nothing but the best.
It made me want to take better care of him and give him pleasure beyond his wildest dreams. I wanted to make sure he never spent another second questioning his self-worth. I never wanted him to have another partner who wouldnât value everything he offered. He deserved someone who would worship him and never take him for granted.
Deep in the recesses of my heart, I heard something whisper, âYou could be that somebody.â
When I had always been allergic to having a romantic partner, it was a startling urge. I enjoyed having my fun and the freedom to be with anyone I wanted. But I had meant it when I had told Rory that he was more than enough. Even holding him in comfort had satisfied me in unexpected ways. I could imagine us curled up on my couch, watching old episodes of Doctor Who and dissecting fandom lore. It was something I wanted more than I understood.
I assumed he had fallen asleep, so it surprised me when he spoke softly, as if he was afraid of breaking the surrounding darkness. âThanks for being patient with me. I know you got more than you were bargaining for dealing with my emotional damage when you were just looking for a good time.â
âIt may have started that way, but you are so much more than that.â
âReally?â The cautious hopefulness in his voice squeezed my heart in a vise.
I told him the truth, since it was something he needed to hear. âYouâre everything I didnât know I needed.â
âWhat do you mean?â
âI hadnât realized how much I needed a friend who saw the real me. I didn't understand what a difference it would make to be with someone who matters.â
His voice was so soft I almost didnât hear him. âI matter?â
âOf course you matter, stóirÃn.â The Irish term of endearment accidentally rolled off my tongue, but he didnât comment on it. I hugged him tighter as I carded my fingers through his hair. There wasnât a chance I was going to deny it when I knew what it meant to him to hear the truth. âThe more time we spend together, you matter a little more with each passing second.â
He snuggled against me with the cutest happy coo. âWow, I think thatâs the sweetest thing anyone has ever said to me.
