Raindrops fought the gusts of wind fiercely, being swept away mid-air, falling diagonally, and slapping the faces of Megan and Kelly, who sat hunched against the bark of a massive hard oak, their sundresses dripping wet, and their eyelids heavy with raindrops.

And tears.

“She never touches your stuff,” Kelly whispered, barely audible over the whistling woods, and far-off thunderstorms.

“She saw us kissing, Kelly. She was onto us. It was only a matter of time before she went through my stuff.”

“I did not know, Megan,” Kelly’s voice shook, and she looked broken.

“I told you to stop with the letters. I told you many times.”

“I love writing for you. It gets me through those god-awful times when I miss you, and can’t even text you. Sliding those letters in your backpack is my way of telling you, I think of you. Even when we are not together.”

“Well, look what it has done. Mom knows about us now. She has proof. And I can’t fight with her now. Not before I leave for college.”

“You don’t need to. Just tell her you will stop seeing me, and we will cool things off for a while.”

“That won’t work now. She has spoken to my aunt, who lives in New York. I will have to leave early and stay there until classes start. And I have no say in the matter.”

“Bullshit,” Kelly spat out, “you always have a say in matters that directly impact your life, and since when have you surrendered to your mom so easily?”

“Since she threatened to cut me off…financially. She won’t pay my tuition, if I don’t stop seeing you, and leave for New York tomorrow.”

“Tomorrow?” lightning flashed in the sky, gods fought amongst themselves in the heavens, while Kelly fought back the urge to scream in agony and frustration, “don’t tell me you are leaving tomorrow Megan. Please don’t.”

Megan sat silent, hugging her knees, rocking back and forth, her eyes staring into nothingness, while her tears mixed with raindrops, fell down her cheeks.

“Megan?” Kelly crawled forward, and sat cross-legged facing Megan, who looked away from her, “Megan, look at me. Tell me you are not leaving tomorrow. We can make this work. We have been making it work for weeks. We will come up with a plan. Something…”

“We can’t come up with anything. She is divorcing my father, and will leave this city to come stay with me in New York, and look for a job there while I go to NYU. She will have her eyes on me, at all times, she will go through my phone, she will have passwords to all my IDs, and if we slip up once, then I can say goodbye to my dreams of becoming a management consultant.”

“What about your father? Can’t he help you? This is blackmail!”

“My father? Don’t you know him? The man is a loser! He is done! He can’t do anything. It will be an achievement if he makes it past 50.”

“Don’t say that, he is your father.”

“I don’t care.
