RIVER
The burger was a bad idea. I need to learn how to say no. But noooooo, I had to go and eat a giant, flaming hot burger in front of two beautiful women, and now I feel like I literally might die. If I donât, at minimum, I will spend some time in my bathroom this evening. I peel my hoodie off over my head, sitting it on my lap because I feel like Iâm on fire.
âWhat are you doing?â Jade asks, instantly concerned. âItâs freezing out here?â
âIs it?â I pull my shirt away from my chest, creating a breeze. âIâm hot.â
âHow could you possibly be hoââ She stops mid-word as she touches my arm. Suddenly she stands, sliding her hand to the side of my neck. Her touch sends chills through me, but I try to stay calm so she wonât notice.
âGetting hotter,â I say jokingly. My mouth canât keep anything cool.
âSheâs in mom mode,â Laney says.
âMom mode?â I ask as Jade pulls her hand from me.
âIâm not in âmomâ mode, but you are super hot.â
âI know, right?â I try to seem smooth, but the fact that Iâm sweating like a snowman in a desert is probably giving me away. Right now, I am not âhotâ.
Jade smirks. âAs in possible fever hot.â
âFever?â I feel my forehead as if Iâll be able to tell. âI havenât had a fever since I was in high school. I thought that was a childhood thing?â
âItâs a humanity thing. You are eating a burger that promised misery. Maybe that special sauce is poison,â she jokes.
What is in that special sauce?
âJovi!â I holler, and he appears like a genie. âYou put rat poison in this thing?â
âNo,â he laughs. âBut itâs going to feel like I did. We donât call it the coronary burger for nothing.â He glances at my plate and smiles, pulling his phone from his back pocket and snapping what is probably the worst photo ever. âCongratulations, youâve now got a twenty-two-dollar credit and your photo on the wall of fame.â
âI feel like that wall is more shame than fame,â Laney says not impressed even a little.
God, I think sheâs right. I groan, shoving the nearly empty plate out of the way and dropping my head onto the tabletop with a thunk.
âI gotta go home. Like, yesterday.â
âFirst you have to bring us home,â Laney reminds me.
âI canât believe Iâm about to say this, but we are not having three-way, I respect your sister too much for that.â I side-eye her, watching her smirk to herself.
âYou drove us,â Laney insists.
âOh yeahâ¦â
âShit.â I drove them. Great idea, River. Show off your cool car and now die in front of them. Youâre really pulling out all the stops tonight. I reach into my pocket, fish out my keys, and set them in Jadeâs hand. âYou know how to drive a stick?â
âYeah,â she says hesitantly.
âGood, âcause youâre driving. Which I canât believe Iâm even suggesting âcause I hardly let anyone drive that car. Sheâs my baby.â
âDork alert; his carâs his baby.
